Hello Everyone,

I am Anshul and will be joining as a Postdoc at Technion sometime in January. I have some doubts regarding insurance. As most of you suggests in the forum that first take a temporary insurance from India and then take another insurance when arrive at Israel.

- As the instructions in the VISA check-list says that "Overseas travel medical insurance valid for Israel" and also that "Travel Insurance must have a validity of a year", will a temporary insurance with a validity of a few weeks still work?
- University guys recommend "Prestige police" with the premium of US$ 840.00 per year. Do you guys take the same policy in Israel or there are other options which I can explore once I am there?

thanks,
regards,
Anshul

As regards options, at least when I took it, there used to be a lower premium option..(not a HUGE difference though)

Hi Anshul,

First of all Congrats. And wel come to Technion.
Ok, you are right in saying for Israel visa in India an insurance policy (1 year validity) for foreign countries (excluding/including US) is needed; its called Travel Insurance. You can get it from any policy companies like ICICI-Lombard or Bajaj Allianz etc. It may cost you around 10,000INR or may be less than that (You can search). Go for a cheaper one because you may/may not claim it (practically saying) here in Israel in some instances.

And when you reach here you better do a Health insurance (the better one "Clalit" for 1 year $840) in the campus only. Again its upto you. But maximum foreign student (Indian) opt for this one even though we stay safely for a year... Haaaa Haaaa....

Anyway, I think its enough for getting a rough idea about the insurance policy.
[I joined in Nov here and followed exactly what I have said]

I don't think you need a travel insurance for a year when you start from India. That's an overkill. I took one that was valid for a couple of weeks (around a thousand rupees), and then got the local one once I arrived here. That way you don't spend two times the money for the same stuff. Worked just fine for me.

I was also thinking to convey the same idea.... I took an insurance for 6 months but it was not necessary and apparently waste of money here.

Just to add a point here (regarding double jeopardy :)), if you go for the premium Technion recommended one, you can do so online, hence prior to visiting Israel and without needing an Indian one.
One person to get in touch with: Mali (Ventura) mali AT yedidim.co.il

Hello Anshul
Congrats for your postdoc approval.
If you have little spare time and you do not want to pay any extra money taking another health insurance policy in India. First you can contact Einat (health insurance company agent) at Ei...@yedidim.co.il and ask her your queries and options available. Ask her if it is possible to take policy of your choice in Israel ( policy starting date you can choose) before your official joining at Technion.
Most probably she is going to say no, but you will be aware of different policy choices available.
After wards you can contact postdoc coordinator Ayellet at Technion and tell her that you wish to take prestige/harel/clalit policy specifically  and  update her about your problem at Katalan Ayellet <kaye...@technion.ac.il>.
Ask her to send you a letter stating that since it is not possible to take the insurance prior to your joining at Technion they should allow your Visa and you will be immediately  covered  under the policy after Joining at Technion.
You can show this letter to Visa office with your 15-30 days regular travel insurance.
I am sure it will work. But all depends on investment of your extra time.
Good luck
Preeti
