Hi All,

We have just announced a change that is coming to our Managed Internet and Security services we offer to schools. You can read more here https://www.n4l.co.nz/n4l-teams-up-with-palo-alto-networks-and-2degrees-for-cybersecurity-web-filtering-and-high-speed-internet/

I have had the pleasure now of seeing the 3rd Iteration of the network roll out and hopefully bring more for our IT community out there to offer the best support to schools.

Cheers,

Hi Clayton, I do hope that this transition will be a little smoother than the one from Cisco and maintain configurability and transparency.

Hi Jeffery,

That is the intention and remember the capability going from a zone based firewall to a layer 7 firewall was a huge jump in a short period of time. We have got a completely different capability set than what was available.

The intention here is to have way more flexibility specially in the integration space. Very exciting times ahead.

Now that N4L is moving away from Sprak's managed firewall product, is N4L managing its own panorama instance(s)?

Does this mean school IT and third-party contractors could have limited access to logs and changes within Panorama?
The above would remove the technical issues, leaving only governance issues to work through.

Hi Jono,

I think it would be good for us to arrange a webinar style thing to explain the solution. I think best to say at the moment that we were very limited in what access was available and management of the infrastructure.

I will pull the following quote out of the release which provides a different flavour to the service. "For the first time, N4L will take full ownership and management of the Managed Network, resulting in enhanced cost efficiency, service flexibility, and a greater ability to manage provisioning and service delivery to support schools promptly and effectively. Moving forward, N4L will build on this new platform by implementing upgrades aimed at continuous improvement"

I can share some more technical detail when the time is right but we are using a hybrid solution utilising cloud security features and on-prem firewalls with a significant enhancement on features available today.

Right, so we won't have access to the Panorama, so, there no change to the current status quo for school IT and 3rd parties. We will still have to fly blind with no access to any logging and be hamstrung by being unable to make any changes.
I don't need the marking Ckayton, just the facts.

I hope with these changes, N4L are at least looking into;
1. Having your own ASN.
2. Your own IPs from APNIC, so we don't have to change NAT rules again.
3. Segregating IPS to LFCs so it's easy to move ASN if the 2degrees core network can't keep up.
4. Impermaenting your own edge cache with Apple - https://cache.edge.apple
5. Implementing your own edge cache with Microsoft - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/do/mcc-isp-overview

Jono,

We were limited before and now we won’t be. The intention is to provide more not less

I Don't have faith, N4L support has(can you believe it) hit an all time low, can't even get a simple request like unblock Teamviewer (This is a principal that has been waiting for 2 weeks for this simple task).....

Come on guys this is nonsense and now I'm sitting on the phone waiting for them to unblock it for 20 minutes, why??? why can't we easily do this ourselves?? the N4L portal is also over the top to the point it makes me change my password every time I log in and jump through hoops

It's like you don't even want to be contacted with the simple things like the website having a phone number listed as   0800 LEARNING which you can't click on and call from a mobile phone ?? You make it almost impossible to support a school without you and silly red tape....it's frustrating to say the least.
