It would be great if someone from N4L could provide an update on the current outage affecting schools connected through MN3 and using 2degrees.

Some information around timelines and the expected behaviour we should be monitoring would be really helpful.

We’re noticing widespread issues with switches, specifically, MAC Authentication is failing, which we suspect is linked to degradation on the 2degrees circuit.

Hi Jono,
We noticed issues relating to DNS and not so much MAC authentication. This is normal to fail in our environment and does not point to an issue with the circuit, if the address is not registered it will be rejected.
If N4L can give an update on the DNS issue that would be appreciated.

Weird, we are not seeing any log/events at the switches per-last week and no new devices added to the school (I will go back and check), only see this on switches that we have not disabled MAC authentication.

Amongst widespread intermittent-connectivity, another issue I saw yesterday was the relay.n4l.co.nz mail server suddenly not accepting SMTP relay from the copier at a school that was migrated 2 months ago. They had been relaying for the new IP fine since migration but then it stopped accepting them yesterday. Good times!

I worked around the damage by configuring the Google smtp-relay service instead.

Hi Jono, one of my engineers has been trying to get hold of you to discuss your MAC authorization issue, which is unrelated, I think, to the outage yesterday.

We’ve been investigating the outages yesterday and have narrowed it down to a periodic, intermittent failure of the DNS function we provide to schools, which is causing intermittent internet connectivity issues in schools.

While we haven’t seen a recurrence of this issue today, we’re continuing to work with our service providers to identify the root cause and are ready to capture logs and other relevant information should DNS fail again.

Apologies for the inconvenience. We’ll provide any significant updates when we can via our web alert - https://www.n4l.co.nz/internet-outage-impacting-schools/
