I have a task which uses Secure settings to turn on the S4 display, unlocks the phone and starts a Google search. This works fine using BT from a Pebble watch; however, I would like to have this task executed when the phone senses an NFC tag. My question is whether it is possible to do this. That is, will the phone see the tag when the display is off and the phone locked as it does with BT? I ahve tried but it does not seem to work and I wnated to know if I am doing something wrong in the setup of if this is a limitation of NFC.

I believe it's a limitation of NFC. NFC doesn't function while the phone is locked or the screen is off. You can try Xposed Framework, NFC LockScreenOff Enabler, but it didn't work on my Note 2.

Thanks. I haven't rooted my S4 yet (wasn't necessary for the unlock task using Secure Settings) but I believe that Xposed Framework requires root. I am hoping that an S4 toolikt for the Tmobile S4 running M919UVUAMDL will appear one day.
