Subject: NEW COURSE IN SOCIOLOGY!

Bethany, can you send this to the graduate students?

For the first time, Samuel Cohn is offering

SOCIOLOGY 640

SOCIOLOGY OF DEVELOPMENT

Development is the grand motor that powers most of the important factors in social life.

Racism is deeply linked to slavery and forms of development that depend on coerced or exploited labor.

Crime is linked to strategies of development that do or do not incorporate opportunities for poor people

Gender inequality is determined in large part by the gendered division of labor - and the role of women in global production chains - women who have their own profound effect on the production systems themselves.

Culture is linked to the ideological structures that are constructed by self-interested parties trying to find their own place in new systems of making money.

Fertility, Mortality and Migration all are shaped by development and in turn shape development in deep ways.

Sociology of Development covers all of these topics, along with an introduction to the great historical forces that have created both global wealth and global poverty and misery.

Work and reading can be tailored to the individual interests of students. There is a common core of reading, that still allows students to pick and choose their supplementary activities to engage with their preexisting areas of primary specialization.

Students should feel free to contact the prof, Samuel Cohn if you have questions or would like further information.

Hope to see you next semester!
