I believe legalizing marijuana is a great idea, perhaps even a necessity in Michigan. In the past decade legalization supporters in Michigan have made several efforts to push for changes to the state’s laws, and while Medical Mariana is currently legal in Michigan, recreational use is still prohibited. Passing laws to legalize marijuana would fix many issues the state faces. Specifically, if marijuana was legalized it would be the potential fix to the failing economy of Detroit by creating jobs in the retail space, freeing the police to focus on serious crimes, stop putting lo-level drug offenders in prison (costing taxpayers millions each year), perhaps most important: generating millions in tax revenue. If the state were to treat and regulate weed like they do with alcohol, the state could licence retail sellers, set tax percentages, and potentially even set restrictions on potency and amount sold to individuals.
I think that Michigan should make marijuana legal. I believe that there is money to be made in this industry that could boost the state economy. Also, this would reduce the amount of people in jail for possession of marijuana and help with over crowding. Last is the fact that no one has ever dies from marijuana and that it is about as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. This is a choice people should be allowed to make just as people are allowed to choose to smoke.
