I would like to get the hard drive out of my late 2012 iMac and I'm wondering if somebody in the group could do that for me.   I bought a new iMac in 2021.

I have been a member of this great club since you had meetings at Google.  I miss seeing everyone in person and hope that will return soon.

Thank you,
Ginny Marley

Ginney,

Why do you want to do that, the display has adhesive holding it on and
not magnets like on other iMac's?
Can't you just backup the data on to a USB external drive and then do
a secure erase on the iMac drive?

I want to get it out because I want to see it being physically destroyed.

You can do a secure 7 pass Department Of Defense wipe of the drive
using DBAN, and your data will not be recoverable, and the iMac may be
useful to some one else, rather then go in a land fill.

Ginny,

There may also be some options to use FileVault encryption on the disk FIRST, wait until it is complete, then booting into Recovery mode, with CMD-R held down, use disk utility to erase the encrypted disk, which is going to delete the encryption keys, so NO ONE would ever be able to access the data.

This is preferable especially on more modern solid state disk (SSD) drives, as the older multiple pass 'secure erase' methods were designed for traditional magnetic rotating disk drive media, but frequently is NOT even an available option for the SSD disks.

The encrypt first, then erase will work on both kinds of media to be VERY secure.

There are several other methods that may be faster or easier too:

or you can do it this way too:

etc...

(I wasn't sure what version of the MacOS you may be using, so, click on the pull down menu with your actual macOS version to get the correct instructions)

Thanks,

Daniel Feldman

Great idea, that would also work, she may have a hard drive and a AHCI
SSD in her 2012 iMac.
