Hey Lokks, I got a request from a fellow hubber to post somewhere open like here say like to start my own thread with info on my new and notable hub shares, much like you know how I do somewhere else (but leave out the direct links). As obviously he does not have access there. What say you?? Actually I think it's an outstanding idea if we all did this, If possible. The chat feature at apex is really sketchy. It restarts all the time and drops all chats. sometimes mine restarts 5 or 6 times a day. So I can only see a post there if I happen to look within an hour or two of the post. And i know it's not just something new cuz mine has always done that. I know it happens to others as well. I think it would be awesome to hear about a new notable share from others, like I would have never known about that excellent new stevie wonder upmix from Eoh if you didn't happen to tell me.
What do you think? Kevin

We had this web to store information on HeresJohnny web site "HiRes or Nothing".
There have not been any activity there since 2014 so I guess it's dead :-), but I can still access it.

I've no issues with this at all, however I am to launch a new site shortly that covers a lot more than just surround, as folks in general like to cover all angles in music. I also want to feature hi-res and tape with a little more enthusiasm. Also remastering which is essentially what you are doing  with upmixes. So what you are suggesting would work in parallel.
And we did use the site of HJ unfortunately I did not welcome (at the time) some of the activities as it was a little too much exposure for the hub when the internet was less expansive than it is now. Now there's lots of sites that are primarily of Russian origin that emulate Avax and are indifferent to IPR issues. So a bunch of enthusiasts that archive and contribute a lot to the industry is not a potential problem like it could have been perceived to be back then. I've not heard from HJ in years too.
So yes go ahead and I'll let you all know about the other stuff.

When you make a site like what you described I would love to take care of the ins and outs of upmixing.
Thanks Holland123 for the compliments about the Stevie Wonder upmix !

you are welcome Eoh, I love stevie and have attempted several of his albums but they are all so center focused that they never came out very well without major premastering manipulation that always seems to wreck the sonics, yours however sounded natural and is a joy to listen to.

Great to hear you're going to launch a new site soon Lokks, with a wide variety no less. Look forward to checking it out. I'm sure it will be amazing. :-)

Just FWIW I don't do any remastering on my upmixes 😉

Are we talking about EoH's upmixes of Innervisions and (esp.) Talking Book? If so, I agree: PoRFiN's SPEC upmixes of those albums used to be my go-to's, but EoH has really (you'll pardon the pun) done wonders with them.  Amazing work!

I appreciate Holland keeping us apprised of what he's up to over at QQ; I'd love to know whenever EoH has something new, too.

I've finally got round to installing Apex. If anyone is interested I'm sharing some B format files and a stand alone B format player (which also has a decoding option).

I don't know if anyone is sharing any B format files, I've not found any on the Hub yet?

Ali.

Ambisonic format, containing either 3 or 4 of the streams: W, X, Y & Z

They need to be decoded, depending how many channels your system has. This is one of the beauties of the Ambisonic system, its sheer flexibility?

Hia, oh, B format. It's the native ambisonic format, the raw channels that come off the mic. W X Y and Z channels. My Meridian processor can decode B format.

I have some spare time this weekend so I installed and configured Apex. Short learning curve but I can't get the search facility to work, I don't know if it's me that's not doing it right, but I've tried a few times, searches always come up blank. Any ideas?

Ali.

Sorry to have to correct you but the information that is derived from the microphone array is actually 'A Format' which is then coverted to 'B Format' for standard use.

There has been some discussion that it may actually be better, in some circumstances to work directly with the A Format information during mixing, etc, but it's probably early days on that point to say for certain whether there is any true improvement over working with B Format.

90 % of my upmixes use B-format !

Well yes, I stand partially corrected. I was thinking of Calrec (as was) Soundfield mics, the mic has to be plugged into the mic amp/controller which outputs B format. The Mic can't work without being plugged into it so there's no direct access to mic output. I know there are other mics available, and of course the likes of Nimbus use their own Haliday mic tree, which is native B format. Appaently the Tetramic is native A format though?

That said, I am in no way an expert on it and am sure there are many people here who are far more knowledgable than myself :)

And the other is the excellent soundquality in surround. Most people consider discrete channels as the only surround, but nothing beats Ambisonics because it's more natural. FWIW you cannot follow a conversation when 5.1 (lol) people talk to you at the same time with different subjects !
As for upmixes I will always prefer good sound with less separation than separation with a lot of artefacts !
