Hi!

As my next project I’d like to tackle The Peasants by Władysław Reymont (translated by Michael H. Dziewicki). Earlier this year, CT let me know that he’s been working on this for PGDP and all four volumes are now available:

My questions:

1. Any tips on merging the four volumes? Any similar SE productions which I can consider as reference?

2. Do we keep the publisher’s note?

3. Do we keep the footnotes (Translator’s Notes)?

I merged the four Pelle the Conqueror volumes into one, see https://github.com/standardebooks/martin-andersen-nexo_pelle-the-conqueror_jessie-muir_bernard-miall. That was a little trickier as the different books had different translators.

For the publisher’s note, as it’s the same in every volume it’s easy to bring to the front as a single note. I’d say it’s probably worth keeping?

For footnotes, yep, migrate them to an endnotes as per usual. You can mark the translator up with an `ann` role, and leave out the “—Translator’s Note” if they’re all from him.

Robin, quick question regarding formatting songs. I'm not sure how to achieve the indentation effect of 'Alas!':

I already use a single level indentation elsewhere with this code:

p span.i1{
padding-left: 2em;
text-indent: -1em;
}

I added an i2 second level indentation as per the manual, but that doesn't indent 'Alas!' enough:

Do I modify i2's indentation or do something else?

The way to use the i classes is to increase the number to whatever level of indentation you need and increase the padding-left value accordingly. Take a look around in some of the poetry collections for examples.

Robin, I'm proofreading the book and I have a question regarding a possible error in translation. I assume we do nothing, but I thought it interesting to raise the point.

The POV is Hanka. She's married to Antek, who has betrayed her with his father's newly wedded, young wife Yagna. This is Hanka's internal monologue:
“Shameless! Without any fear of Heaven!⁠—Her son-in-law, guilty of incest!⁠—O God! O God!” (Scans)

As I read this, I found it difficult to parse the "her son-in-law" bit, especially since Hanka was focusing on her husband. I checked the original in Polish, here's a very literal translation of the corresponding sentence:
"He has no shame, he fears no God, it's as if he mated with his biological mother! Jesus! Jesus!"

So, we can read the translation as "[With] her son-in-law, [both] guilty of incest!" which starts to make sense, even though the translator took some liberties.

Anyway, is there an obvious solution in a case like this?

Yep, we do nothing I think. The furthest we really go is correcting misspellings. I can’t think of any obvious fix here that doesn’t involve a retranslation.

From a PD point of view they’re all fine, and I’ve added all three to the artworks DB. I don’t really have an opinion on the suitableness given that I’m not familiar with the book, so I’ll leave that up to you. How do they look mocked up?

Good catch! I don't have a strong opinion on which is the correct version. The scans use  “Michael H. Dziewicki”, but I went with PG's “Michael Henry Dziewicki”. Also, there is precedence for the latter in a previous (your) SE production https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/zofia-nalkowska/women/michael-henry-dziewicki

I think it's fine to leave it as is, but my experience is limited. What do you think?

OK, I've updated the placeholder.

Usually we prefer what is printed in the book versus PG's naming,
because they tend to use full names and sometimes even titles. However
in this case "Women" had his middle name in the scans, so we should be
consistent.
