Since we have all of Conrad's novels, I'd like to (as my "crowning achievement") do Conrad's short fiction. I'm preparing my first spreadsheet:

Questions:
1. Is 'Date published' the earliest of serial or book form publication? 

2. Do I need to add a column with 'First serial publication'?
3. How accurate does the 'Word count' need to be at this point? Is approximate enough?

Please edit that copy from now on.

Date published is for PD purposes, so if the stories are identical in
serial and in book form then the earliest date is fine.

No need for an additional column.

Approximate is fine unless it's near 40k words. It's for categorizing
work into short/long.

Alex, I've finished editing the spreadsheet. 

1. Can you confirm that I've filled it out correctly?

2. Conrad's short fiction was quite conveniently published in several volumes. I assume we drop all the dedications and author's notes.

3. Any tips for a first-time omnibus producer?

Are the dedications/author's notes for the entire compilation/volume, or
are they attached to individual stories? If they're part of the stories
we can include them.

I see we should also include Heart of Darkness in this omnibus. Out of
curiosity, was HoD included in the compilations you're looking at?

I'm not sure how we would splice the history of that repo into a new
repo. I suppose this is also going to be a problem for Robin's Thomas
Mann omnibus since we have to include "Bashan and I." Robin any ideas?

You can get started, please send a link to your repo.

There's no special notes for omnibuses, except that instead of <section>
you'll use <article> and make sure to include the metadata identifying
it as a collection, see the manual.

That is a really good point that I’d completely blanked on. I guess the options are:

1. Start with the existing repo, then copy in a set of “Short Fiction” files as a new commit, join the existing production into a single file, change the remote to a new endpoint, and use that as the base.
2. Theoretically you can have multiple commits that don’t have parents in a repo. I believe you create these by merging in a tree into another with --allow-unrelated-histories but I’ve never tried this.

I think my strong recommendation would be option 1. I didn’t do this for Thomas Mann, but it won’t take me long to start over. I’ll go down this path unless anyone has any concerns?

The author notes are for the entire compilations so we'll have to drop them.

Heart of Darkness was included in "Youth and Two Other Stories". If we're including HoD in the omnibus, will it remain a standalone as well?

I'll start the repo after my vacation, so around August 20th. I'll follow the discussion in this thread on how to include HoD but I'll probably have questions! :)

Not saying this is what we want to do, but I didn’t keep the history when I merged “A Yankee in Canada” into Thoreau’s essays (nor, like Robin, did it even occur to me to do so), and no one said anything. :)

Yeah I think option 1 is probably going to the easiest in this case,
since we only have one work to consider. If and when we end up having to
merge more than one work then we can look more closely at more complex
solutions.

So Szymon you can clone the existing Heart of Darkness repo and use that
as a starting point. Then simply proceed as usual, and change the
title/slug/etc. to Short Fiction.

Please send a link to your repo once you start!

Robin if you're not too far along then you could do that same thing for
Thomas Mann.
