Hello,

I would like to attempt a Standard Ebooks production of The Rivet in Grandfather’s Neck by James Branch Cabell. № 14 in the Biography of the Life of Manuel series. I picked it from the "For your first production" suggestions on the wanted ebooks list. Please let me know if I can get started with this book. I'm still reviewing the style guide and step-by-step instructions.

Great, that one would be a good start.

This book has a dedication, so you will add a half title page.

It's also divided into parts, see the manual for how to structure that.
Each part has an epigraph, which you can include in the part file, like
part-n.xhtml.

Make sure to look at the page scans for formatting that might have been
removed from letters, particularly small caps.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

OK, Robin will manage this with Lukas reviewing.

Forgot to mention, remember to add the series information to the ebook
metadata. See the manual for how to do that. Thanks!

Good Evening,

I feel like I'm getting ahead of myself with this question, but when I get to setting up the string for the title page, should I be including the quote that is in the original scans of the book? Below is the link for the scans I found on The Internet Archive.

That’s a subtitle, and it’ll be included in two places. First, you’ll add it to the content.opf metadata, see https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.8.4/single-page#9.4.2. Then it’ll need to be included on the half title page (after the dedication), see https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.8.4/single-page#6.5.

For the rest you can leave the book title as just “The Rivet in Grandfather’s Neck”.

Good Afternoon,

i switched from working on a windows to a mac and I can't figure out how to upload edits to the github I had set up. Would it be possible to delete the repository I had and just send a link for the new one?

Presumably it’s just that you haven’t set up an SSH key linked to your GitHub account on your mac? There’s documentation on how to do that at https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/connecting-to-github-with-ssh.

Most of the work to push has to be done regardless of what the repository is.

If you don’t have the repository setup on your Mac yet (you may know all this, I’m just playing it safe :):
On the code screen of your GitHub repository, click the green “Code” button and copy the repository name (or click the button next to it with the tooltip of “Copy URL to clipboard”).

Then on your Mac, in whatever directory you want to put the repository, do a “git clone <repository name>” on the command line, where <repository name> is pasted from the clipboard.

At that point, if you do a “git remote -v”, you should see an ‘origin’ remote pointing to the GitHub repository.

Once that’s done, the Mac needs to be configured to be able to push to GitHub. The “Adding a new SSH key to your GitHub account” link on the authentication page walks you through it.

Thank you both for the responses, I was able to set up the SSH for my laptop and was able to start pushing commits to Github.
