2014 Treks

Hi Guys,

I wanted to see what the trekking plan is for this year. Its the 60th anniversary of the K2 summit so it will be a busy season so wanted to get the conversation started early.

I am interested in attempting Snow Lake again (preferably in June before Ramazan)

Ideally would want to do Snow Lake then go back to Pindi via Jeep,  Karimabad to Skardu via Deosai and then back via Babusar Pass.

I am still confused on what to do this summer. I am giving it a serious thought of doing Snow Lake this year. The June dates would suit me perfectly, though I might skip the Deosai leg of the trip.

B, anything else you got in mind as a backup for Snow Lake? Any other treks anyone?

I think snowlake is the easiest trek in this world. Do some thing new "Chilingi Pass" :)

Anyways June looks perfect for me and my brother Yasir. What about Masroor bhai, Aatif Behari and Munna, I didn't see any comments from then of this email. Sad-------------------------- " lagta hay sab lihaf mein ghus ke so rahay hein" I didn't pass any coments for my Daku Sardar - Ahmed. :)

Chilingi Pass is for August/September and is a technical pass from what I have heard and read. 

We can look into that as well if we have a strong guide with us.

The reason for adding Deosai and Babusar at the end was, so we have more buffer days for the trek. And if we get stuck because of weather we could just forgo one or both of the jeep rides.

Also last time (2012) it was  hard to find seats on NATCO and had to hire a hi-ace from Skardu. Asad didn't you have problems getting on NATCO from Gilgit in 2013?

So if we already account for our own transportation and I really recommend a night stop, last time the hi-ace driver drove 24 hours straight without sleeping and seeing him drive was scarier than any thing on the trek.

I agree with Saad, Snow Lake > Chilingi

I think the campsite on snow lake are great. I was really disappointed from the campsites during the Gondogoro trek. I really missed the lush green and completely private valleys we camped on the Biafo during Snow Lake. Plus Asad Bhai don't you want to see the view from the top of Hisper La?

No doubt its not easy to take transport like Natco or Hi-Ace from Gilgit to Islamabad. Yes usually private jeeps and cars available are there. They normally take 4 passengers @ Rs.5000/= per person.

I would like see many times the view from top of Hispar La "Aur jab B saath mein ho tu kia baat hay" Abay Munnay kithay mar gaya hay teri koi email nai arahi.

I am interested to go new area instead of Karakoram range. chilinji is good option. however snowlake option is also open; for B's sake. Keeping in view year-end affairs in June, August is preferred month for me.

Hindu Kush treks are a bad idea before June. Last year a group went to Karambar Lake (4320m) mid June and found it frozen.

B, can you give a rough idea on the Snow Lake itinerary? When to start, when to end, how many days etc?

I have done the Wakhan Corridor trek, the one described in the blog you shared.

Chillngi pass is different, far more demanding than the Wakhan Corridor trek.

I am not sure yet about my program. If i go this year, Chilinji Pass trek in the month of August is my first option. Saad, do u have contact number/email address of any person or trekking company  in Chitral or Gilgit region whom I can discuss chilinji pass trek? i am asking because u have done Wakhan trek in that region.

Masroor bhai, Chillinji and Wakhan Corridor are 2 very different treks (Snow Lake and G-La would be a good parable here).

Both Wakhan and Chillnji end at the same spot (Borth) but they start from very different spots. Wakhan starts from the Chitral side and during the course of the trek the group goes from west to east. Whereas Chillinji starts from Sost area and during the course of the trek the group goes from east to west.

Wakhan Corridor was a fairly simple trek, with no technical parts in between. Therefore we did the trek without a guide and only had a cook as part of our staff. The cook would also act as our translater when we had to deal/negotiate with the locals there.

For Chillinji we will require a solid guide coz of the technical bits.

Also, Wakhaan Corridor is a no go in June coz the snow has not melted by then. Last year a group had to return from Karomber Lake as the snow hadn't melted there making it impossible to cross that bit of the route. They reached the lake around mid-June. My group reached the lake in the beginning of July and there was still bits of snow here and the place was mostly swampy coz of the recently melted snow. I also know of a group that went there in end June 2010 and they also had to deal with snow.

Thank u Saad for informative mail. Chilinji looks better. Now i would try to establish contact with someone from Hunza,Gujal or shimshal area so as to check the feasibility of this trek in month of August. i will update the group.
