Hi all

My iPhone 5, since updating to iOS8, has a nasty habit of 'dying' when there's a good 30% battery. I've tried reboots, resets, reinstalls etc... so decided to see a 'Genius'. Might they do any battery tests?

In short, is it worth the journey? Are they likely to be able to fix it?!?!

You could try installing a replacement battery, they’re quite cheap from ebay and a 5minute installation time

Thanks Sam, perhaps that's best as they're less than £10 and iFixIt makes it look easy - although the ribbon cables worry me!

Thing is, it was working fine before iOS8, so it's either coincidence, or since then, things are off. I wasn't sure if they'd plug it in and do some diagnostic checks to ascertain any problem? Is that what they do?!?!

I don't know if this applies but there is a known issue with the iPhone 5 if you use it with a non-genuine lightning cable. There is an IC that appears to get fried when using non genuine cables as they apparently don't regulate their voltage in the same way.

I've seen two go like this and replacing the IC is possible but extremely labour intensive.

The Genius Bar can always be a big help. I once took my MacBook in to them when it was a few months out out of warranty but they still carried out a repair free of charge.

With regards to your phone, if it has been happening since the software update it may be an iOS8 problem rather than hardware problem. I have the same issue on my iPhone 4S since I upgraded to iOS7. The device could have anywhere upto 40% battery life but it will shut itself down claiming to have no battery life, however it would start up again when the charger is connected or if I leave it for 30 minutes or so.

With iOS devices they don't carry out hardware repairs in store. They will swap your phone for a like for like. They still have stock of the iPhone 3GS just incase someone comes into the Genius Bar with one. If the phone does need replacing out of warranty the worst you would be looking at is a small fee for unit replacement. Recently did this with an iPhone4 because the home button was starting to stick. £40 charge and they did a like for like replacement - new iPhone4.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Adam, really helpful post. I don't think I've fried that chip, but that confirms I won't use after-market cables again!

Benjamin, I didn't know about the swaps, so I think I might head in store. Thing is, if it's an iOS issue (sounds like you have the same trouble on your 4S) will a replacement handset give me he same grief?

I would go to the store anyway as Apple should be able to advise further. I can't guarantee a new phone will resolve the issue.  Before you make your appointment you may wish to check for software updates. They may know about the bug and the update may resolve the issue.

Best of luck finding a solution.

Apple are replacing batteries free of charge on some iPhone 5s, here’s the link https://www.apple.com/uk/support/iphone5-battery/ to see if you are eligible.

Genius bar appointments get booked up really fast, so I would always recommend booking an appointment at a convenient time for yourself *as soon as* you notice the slightest strange behavior with your mac or iphone.

Chances are that basic troubleshooting will solve the problem, in which case cancel your genius appointment and you haven't lost anything.  Otherwise you can tear your hair out for weeks troubleshooting a hardware issue, give up and book an appointment, and then have to wait a further week before there is a time slot you can make.

They also get released at midnight so if yo ustruggle to get one, 12.05 is when the London ones disappear (#TrueStory).

I have been trying to take my Macbook Air in for repair under warranty since November but can never get a slot..:(
