critical - Apple’s terminology. It was released today. You can get it via the App Store. Apple is suggesting it’s installed asap.

I've woken my iMac up from sleep and there was a notification that a security update had been installed. So it looks like it happens automatically.

Its on the BBC news too - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-30587243
So probably worth paying attention to, and doing the update. (Done on all our computers) ... Graham

But what about Snow Leopard? I still have an older Macbook running that beautifully (and I still miss its speed and stability).

How do I update that?!

Also in the release notes for the update I believe it’s only for 10.8+

So, is Snow Leopard vulnerability free, or just unsupported?!

You can’t patch it but you can switch off automatic date & time updating in System preferences, that’ll close the offending process.

Sam, to be clear - you open System Prefs, go to date and time and then deselect 'Set date and time automatically'?

I am still on 10.9.5. Should I update to Yosemite immediately, or might it be OK to wait till, say, after Christmas?

Hi Gilly

You can upgrade to Yosemite but you’ll still have the adware installed. Try Adware Medic and if that doesn’t help we can set up a teamviewer session for this afternoon.

All done on all machines.

Just quickly though, I'm mindful that over the years, I've always told friends and family "not to worry with system clogging antivirus stuff for a Mac. Just be sensible online, and don't type admin passwords in unless you know why, and you'll be fine."

Are those days over? Seems this NTP vulnerability for SnowLeopard/Lion machines is rather worrying?

I've always bought the line that OSX is inherently secure (as Unix based), compared to Windows?!

Am I out of touch/misinformed/naive all 3?!

Do hope you all had a great Christmas and some enjoyed some new Apple products!

In order to exploit most flaws the attacker would need to either be on your local network or your router's firewall has to let them through, which has to be manually set up.

I wouldn't worry too much just yet unless if you regularly use free wifi networks

I think your advice is still quite sound Adam, though I'm sure Sam is the man to advise!

Since my first Mac in 1984, I've never installed any anti-virus software and to date, as far as I know, I've still never had a problem.

AppleInsider.com are often pointing out that a number of sensational "disaster" headlines are simply Apple click-bait stories and that infections only happen if you've done something rather foolish along the lines you mentioned by clicking on a link or providing information you really shouldn't or on iOS problems invariably require that you have jail-broken your device.

My basic approach is any emails from a/my "bank" or similar get marked as junk straight off. Don't provide a PIN and anything that says "dear customer" instead of your real name, gets junked. Always check the sender's email and if it purports to be from, Lloyds, say, but comes from "ad...@specialbank.lloyds.fribble.tk" or similar should be treated as garbage.

I think basically it comes down to, check the source and destination of anything inviting you to click or tap or suchlike. If it looks a bit odd then bin it. If it is real then they will contact you again.

A happy, virus, phishing and malware free New Year to one and all.

Stephen
