Hi all

We've been donated an older iMac, but it's rather slow with Yosemite and all the previous owners stuff on there.

I rather hoped that a full wipe and fresh install of El Cap would help?

Also, I realise that'll mean I lose Pages etc as they came pre installed and my kind donator has long since lost all disks. Is there anyway I can take those off and reinstall?

If not, Libre Office it is but the children know Pages well so....

Thanks folks

Adam

Installing El Cap, even as a fresh install, on a Mac with a rotational hard drive (ie non-SSD) will slow it down noticeably. I’d install an SSD and then upgrade to El Cap.

I would certainly vouch for Sam's opinion here - he installed a 1 Tb SSD into my old iMac which was considerably crippled by El Capitan and it's brilliant.

He installed an SSD into my iMac too, and it is a different machine. So fast!

Ok, thanks all, and point taken (in fact did that with my MBPro and yes, it's a new machine!)

But, dare I say this is for primary school children who are increasingly asked to do simple things at home online. Speed isn't essential.

But Yosemite is rather slow on it. Perhaps an El Cap update won't make it worse at least?

Also, is there a way of doing some sort of 'factory restore' only, there's lots of apps on the iMac slowing it down, as it was a corporate machine so I rather suspect a fair few background processes and apps trying to sync to their network etc etc. Lots of little 'utilities' I don't recognise anyway!

Thanks

Adam

Hi Phil

Just wondering how your El Cap upgrade is going now you've had it a few months?

My father has updated (I've held off as love Mavericks) and had all sorts of issues, 'lost' images from iPhoto, duplicate Contacts, Safari not remembering passwords.... is it a horrid headache or has he just had a bad time of it.

I don't recall ever being so frightened of updating a Mac! Feels all very 'Windozey' to me :(

I’ve not had or seen any of those issues after upgrading to El Capitan, it’s been relatively smooth sailing so far (if you have an SSD installed)

Hi Sam,

I have decided to follow your advice and install an SSD before upgrading to El Capitan. Which SSD would you recommend?

Gilly, the SSD which Sam fitted in my iMac (which is about 5 years old) has transformed it. You won't regret your decision!!

I’m facing a similar decision but don’t really know which way to jump…

It’s like this….I have a mid 2010 27” iMac running Yosemite with a 2TB conventional internal drive. I really ought to upgrade to El Cap (so I can use the latest version of InDesign) but part of me thinks selling the iMac and getting a more recent one might be a better bet than upgrading to SSD (I mean, the iMac is six years old so probably nearer the end of its life than the beginning). Thoughts anybody?

You can now get a 2TB SSD, they're just a bit pricey

Sam,

Yeah that’s at the root of my conundrum – with 2TB SSD being pricey, would it be more sensible to trade-in the existing iMac?

Or use the existing 2TB of the iMac as some sort of file store/server and connect it to a new iMac with an SSD?

Best of both worlds?!

Nice idea Adam but I’ll need to raise some dosh by selling the existing iMac to afford a new (well, more recent previously loved) one.

Too true!

The refurbs on the Apple Store are always worth checking (good condition, warranty etc....) albeit doubtless something of a premium price I imagine.
