Hi everyone,

I am getting tired of the following Error Message coming up on my Mac Mini:

"Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address."

I have restarted my router and my Mac Mini but error message continues popping up.

Any ideas much appreciated.

That would be down to your router which gives out the IP addresses and has probably given the same IP address to two devices. Try rebooting your router and see if that clears it.

you could set them all to request a manual IP that's different? It
depends which devices are in use. The router might support giving them a
fixed IP so they would never clash.

Is it a NetGear router? You might need to upgrade the firmware on it as they quite often had issues with the DHCP server.

Also, if there’s a device on your network which is set with a manual IP address, that would interfere with the DHCP server giving out that particular IP address automatically without knowing it’s been set manually on another device.

Hi Diana,

It may be a wireless device conflicting, do you know how many devices are connecting on your network?

Are you able to connect to the internet (send your e-mail) after you see this error message?

No problems connecting to internet before or after error message. I have on my network printer, Sky box and television. Plus I have iPad and iPhone.

Weird, usual the device that has been kicked off the network receives that message.

I suggest that one of the devices has a fixed IP and is conflicting with one of the dynamically assigned ones. When the fixed device is woken or turned on it cannot connect and a notification is sent around.

You could power off all devices, turn on the Mini and check you can connect to the internet, then one by one turn on the others and see which one generates the error. Then check to see if it has a fixed IP?

Graham

I used to find this sort of thing happening when others were poaching on a network. I’d turn my machine off, and then find someone else had acquired the IP I was on. I don’t remember if this was dynamic or hand set (it happened a lot in a university in Australia).

I don’t remember if you have password protected your network. If not you might have someone borrowing your wifi, and that just might be cause of the problem.

Thi smay be utter nonsense, or perhaps not.

My network is password protected to prevent poaching and I am the only user most of the time. I shall look further into stuff I have on it conflicting.
