Hello,

I wonder what's the impression you have experienced for the Feature Tour on your sites, if you used it?
We have this feature enabled for all users visiting site first time, to guide them around the web page and show some features we have.

But, we noticed that only about 8% of people are clicking the "next" button on the feature tour, and the rest just close it.
Is it the normal percentage or it should be much higher?

Hi Michael,

What's a "normal percentage"? I don't think there is such a thing. 8% is your percentage now. If you know that visitors that view the tour are more likely to sign up, then you want to make that number higher. To do that you do some a/b testing of some description and try different text, buttons, layout, etc and see if you can increase the click rate. Possibly even better you might look at your advertising and see if you can get more targeted visitors to your site in the first place. That would possibly increase the tour view rate too..

If someone said, "yeh, that's normal", would you just accept that or try to make it better anyway?

cheers,

Jason

I was wondering what percentage is general across others :)
If everyone's else feature tour has 30% clicks then definitely something wrong with ours and we need to change it, or maybe the features tour clicks are about 5% across all web sites and we have good results and shouldn't touch it

I agree with Jason. I haven't seen any stats on it, and its a matter of tweaking it and seeing if it improves signups, conversions, and first time user experience.

There was a really blog post by Linkedin on product tours and they've open sourced the code as well:

What is interesting is that they don't just use it just for the first time usage of linkedin, but for any product tours that are required. For example, if they launch a new feature to an existing user, they can also use it to guide the user.

Whilst I can't give you a specific %, my other suggestion is to watch how people use your product and talk to them about it. You could watch them in-person (i.e. over their shoulder) and also using analytics and find out where they might be getting stuck and dropping off. I also like to ask customers about their first time user experience was and what could be improved.

I also implemented an instructional feature when people first signed into my apps, but I realised that it wasn't very helpful. It actually confused people, so I ended up removing it! I feel that the onboarding process (the first 30-40 seconds) is so critical so I can understand why you are asking this question :)

Cheers,

I'd be personally disappointed by 8%, unless everyone's signing up...  perhaps get a new UX chap :-)

seriously, i do agree with the earlier two commentors, but also, i think there's a real benefit in you setting up your own expections. I  suspect 8% is not bad - but i would aim a little higher - like 15%, or even 20% .....

Best, Sam.

I wouldn't be too surprised by the results; I struggle to think of any
sort of user who would go through such a tour. If users come to your
site wanting to achieve a particular goal, it's just another thing
standing in their way to that goal. If users come just to be
entertained, a feature tour is not very promising either. The latest
xkcd may also be relevant: http://xkcd.com/1264/

Do you have measurements on how the tour affects conversions (or
whatever you're after)? That's probably a much more important question
than whether people go through it or not...

I think you'll find that alot of people are visiting your site to view something specific.

If they close the tour, where do they land?

Have you tried removing the tour all together, and letting people find their own way?

Mariel.

We have tours on 2 of our products http://checkdog.com and http://manageflitter.com and in fact spun these tours out into a separate product http://tourcow.com which we have deployed across a couple of Australian enterprise size companies.

Ideally a brilliant UI should not necessitate a tour - but UI is never perfect for everyone and some people like tours.  I have asked our devs to put some detailed tracking in the tours and I will see if I can report back with any useful metrics to you folks.
