Hi everyone,

ThoughtSTEM is currently accepting applications for a Ruby on Rails software development position for its educational platform, LearnToMod, that teaches kids coding through Minecraft modding. (No Minecraft or modding experience is required for this position, however.) We're looking for a developer to help us develop a test-suite.

Skills/Requirements:
-Ruby on Rails (applicants should have at least 1-2 years experience)

The Rails project we are currently hiring for is a 2-month project, but the salary will be equivalent to a $70k/year salary. We're looking for applicants who can start immediately. If you're interested in applying for the position, please send a resume including relevant Ruby on Rails experience to applic...@thoughtstem.com

Sorry y'all! Looks like applic...@thoughtstem.com isn't working right now. You can e-mail applications directly to me (lin...@thoughtstem.com.)

Yeah, that's why you haven't received any applicants ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist, a 2 month contract at $70k rate? That's so far below market it's laughable. Good luck.

Hi Lindsey

It is probably true that your contract is well below the market rate for professional Ruby developers (especially in So Cal).  This is list is followed by a wide range of Ruby programmers.  Many of which may be interested in such a contract.  I hope that you and other job posters are not turned off by negative comments.

Cheers

Honestly, I don't know how anyone who would do such a short term contract for that rate would be any good at developing a test suite.

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the feedback.

What would you suggest we offer to a Rails developer that only has 1-2 years of experience?

What ThoughtStem are doing is awesome... piquing the interest of the next generation in computer science & programming in a way that is meaningful for kids.

That affects our economy and the richness of our future lives.

So if you're the kind of person who is motivated by helping society, then you can still live comfortably on $70k, and do something fulfilling while you're at it.

Thanks, Ben! We're a small start-up still, and our lead developer thinks this is a pretty easy job for someone relatively new to Rails (hence the deflated price-tag.) You're also welcome to e-mail with a counter offer. :)

I think most of the LEARN students would happily and effectively write a nice suite of tests with modest guidance from a more experienced developer.

In fact, I'll go further and say to everyone that that unless you love writing tests (there are folks who do, so I hear, but if you're, like, *normal*) then hiring a junior dev for a couple of months to beef up your tests is likely to be a great investment for both of you.

Hi Guys,

Its important to keep an open and cordial community. @Guyren is running a new startup, which is complex enough. As a small note, it is often best to advertise specific projects like this as a clear statement of work rather than a remote employee/contractor basis. For example: "$5k for a small batch of unit tests using Selenium / Capybara, remote is fine, small startup" would do. The year long salary may not be relevant, and in this case it may have come across in a way you did not intend. Good luck with your search!

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Lindsay,

I'll vouch for the LEARN program personally; I'm the CTO at a startup and Kaitlin, who we recruited as an intern from the school and is now on our payroll as a junior developer, has been doing a wonderful job developing functionality and writing tests for our product.

Give me a shout if you need any help recruiting, I'll be glad to share what I know, now that I've already recruited my stellar team, of course. :-)

The LEARN program sounds very intriguing! Thanks for the pro-tip, guys!

To clarify the original posting based on some inquiries we've gotten: we strongly prefer a candidate that works in-town.

@Lindsey: Assuredly, there are local, intelligent, ambitious individuals with tremendous support networks, who deliver results on time and will jump at such an opportunity. (I happen to be one of them).

@Jason: I'm optimistic some in our field can scoff at what’s essentially $12k for two months of writing tests. :-)

@Tay: You and Kaitlin rock!
