Let me write the disclaimer first that I am not advertising for this product. I bought it, used it, I like it and want to share with others who might have similar goals. Now lets get to the mail :)

I always wanted to memorize Bhagwadgeeta - some can argue whats the need to memorize, an elderly person said once to me, everything is in the book, whats in your head is only matters and someday will be useful to you.

I created Anki deck for Shrimad Bhawadgeeta, Here is the link for it

I set myself 2 - 3 shlokas a day at this pace I should be able to memorize entire text within a year.  You can download Anki Software from here http://ankisrs.net/
I can tell you more about this software but all the info is given on the above given website.

Set yourself at a realistic pace and make it a habit to use this program regularly. When we don't have any tool we tend to procrastinate, with this tool, if you skip 5 days then when you open the software it will show, 10 - 15 new cards to memorize and depending upon where you are number of cards to review. Beginners can see some you tube videos to learn more about using the program.

To use the deck I shared -
Install Anki on your device
download the file I shared in the above link
Double click it
Its defaults to 20 cards a day change it to your liking.
Happy learning

I hope someone finds this information useful. I am creating similar deck for Ashtadhyayi and if audio is available i can create similar one for Amarakosha as well.

Raama,

Yes, but you should mention that the deck is a rather large download (90+ MB) which can eat into a users monthly download allowance
- this probably due to the fact that it contains audio files.

You should also mention that the deck is entirely in the Devanagari script.

Anki software is completely free, BTW.

It is especially designed for learning long list of items such as alphabets (not to mention their ligatures!), conjugations and inflections,
as it overcomes the common problem of overlearning the first items in such lists,
to the detriment of the later ones.
Due to the ever lengthening list of items to repeat to get to the unlearned ones!

In a word, it reduces the tedium of such learning chores, to the extent that it is increases the possibility of actually getting to the job done!

Raama, how about a deck of flashcards for Devanagari - now, that would be useful. Would you believe that  there isn't one!
I have created one for my own use, but without authentic audio. . . and without schooling in the art of presenting teaching material!

Hands up, all those that want to learn all the verses of the Ashtadhyayi by heart!  (:-)

It has long since been proved that such epic tasks on a developing mind (young children) has the serious side effect leaving other naturally acquired mental skills e.g. social skills, empathy etc.,  permanently undeveloped.

Mindless repetition can damage your health!

Multimedia industry probably didn't see this.  Nor the parents who buy this stuff for their kids.  Now, imagination tends to get shaped according to Disney characters / Dora / Diego ... or the newer characters.

Taff,
Thank you for your e-mail. all the things you mentioned about anki are already there. when you click on a deck it shows the size of the deck, that's why I did not feel the need to mention it again. I am not aware of any monthly upload / download size limit.
Its free for desktop and android version, however for iOS one has to pay $25.

It would be nice to create a deck for Devanagari alphabets. May be someday I will.

"Mindless repetition can damage your health!"
I have to humbly disagree with you on above statement
Personally I know may people who memorized entire "Ashtadhyayi" bhagwadgeeta, Rudram, Mahanyasam and many texts from Vedas, I do not see any health problems in them. May be rote memorization is in the Indian genes.

as a kid I memorize Vishnu & lalita sahastranamam, many other stotras, those were all mindless repetition, nothing happened to my health.

Raama,

You must realize, that ordinary people do not have your extraordinary powers.

I for one, am only able to 'click on a deck' to obtain its size -after- I have downloaded it, not before!

And do understand, that normal people are unable to read minds. It is a weakness we have.
Given that the vast majority of computer users on the planet are Windows users,
that is the natural assumption we make. We have to be specifically informed if otherwise.

Again, please be aware that when people speak of 'download size limits', and no such a limit is obvious, the tend to look around for the not obvious. -  perhaps to the limits imposed by their ISP's, where the ability to download unrestricted GB's of comes at a price!

Whatever.

Perhaps you can enlighten me here:

I have long wondered what happens after all those the 'rules' of grammar have been memorised.

Assuming that the fruits of such labours lies in the application of such rules, how are they actually applied?

To use a simple English 'rule' as an example:
Having learnt the rule 'i before e, except after c', a long time ago. Faced with that particular spelling situation, I originally had the need to remind myself of that rule by reciting it. Eventually, it became possible for me to be able to write such as 'receive' without even thinking about rules!
And likewise, exceptions to such rule, e.g. science - I have no idea how many of exceptions there are, what rules they have, indeed if there are any.

So, my question is, does the same situation apply to users of that most perfected of grammars, albeit with the added complexity of having to get at the relevant rules in the first place.

Artha:
Do beginners have to recite all the way from the beginning? How do they get to the stage where they are they able to jump straight to the relevant rule(s)?

I have yet to get the hang of this life, let alone the next one.

आत्मीय सीतारामजी,

you have done a wonderful favour by bringing Anki to our notice. I have downloaded the software as well as Bhagavad Geeta and have started using it effectively.

coming to mindless repetition:
we have done it quite effectively during our school days and it has helped rather than doing any harm. We memorized tables, dhatu paath, shubhashitas, hyms and what not !!  In fact memorising tables have helped us do maths quickly and in a better way.

Anki, will be very much useful as it is scientifically structured.

Dear Taff,
you have mentioned many things in your mail. Let me see if I can address all the issues.

1. I am attaching anki webpage screenshot to show you where the file size appears. It even gives a warning in red text.
2. Ordinary people think they are ordinary and that's why they are ordinary. Extraordinary are not special people, they just don't think they are ordinary folks and work lot harder compared to rest of the pack to prove it.
3. Regarding usage of grammar rules, that's a detailed study in itself. People spend years mastering it, I am still working on my rules memorization and therefore have a long way to go. I have to memorize 5 more chapters. But during my journey I created some notes and I am attaching a copy with this mail. This note is derivation of Rama Shabda.
4. About applying rules all I can say is only practice can help, may be other scholars can comment on that one. as my teacher say "पुरुषार्थ तो करना ही पढता है ".  Meaning one has to go through the labor of learning there is no other way. There is another hindi proverb "अपने मरे बगैर स्वर्ग नही मिलता" one does not attain heaven without dying. person who has to desire to go to heaven has to die. Here dying is analogous to hard working.

Regards
Raama

Gajananji,
Go to this website http://ankisrs.net/
Download the correct version of Anki, the website should take you to right selection based on the OS you are running, but you can make sure you are download the installer based on your operating system
Double click the downloaded file and it should install the software for you.
Go to this link and download Bhagwadgeeta Deck

once the download is complete, double click on the file and it should open the Anki software with 20 cards per day to study. Change it to your liking and you are good to go. That's all there is for the installation and usage of Anki, here is google search for anki installation may be some of the videos here would help as well.

Hari Om

Respected Sri Ramji

Can you please guide me on how to get sanskrit fonts to appear in Anki. i tried to create a deck to revise sanskrit words for my exam but nothing is showing up.

I tried to move to follow the directions given in "custom font' installation but it still did not work. I would be very indebted to you if you can let me know what are the steps required to create a deck with sanskrit fonts for memorizing rules. Thank you very much.

You are following up a 7 mth old thread. However, perhaps I can be of some help as I have used (played with) Anki.

As explained down in the Help manual, font styling etc. is effected through HTML and CSS format style sheets.

There is a video on youtube showing how its done

           http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1j1Zx0mXME

But to start with, I found it better to import a ready made package, and experiment with that.

Dig around on https://ankiweb.net/. Be warned though, Anki is difficult  to master. It is easy to use - once you've learned how.
