Fascinating.

What does salt --versions return on the master and minion?

It sounds like there is something out of whack with your minion cache. Try stopping salt-minion, blowing out /var/cache/salt/minion on the affected minion then restart the service. The only time I have experienced this was when I was renaming a bunch of minions.

Yes, i did that and it started working. One more thing there we multiple minion process on minion, manually killed all the processes. No idea, how multiple minion process were created.

This error also appears if you have a cloned servers running salt and forget to change /etc/salt/minion_id to current hostname.

I wanted to say that I noticed salt-minion running twice when trying to upgrade it, which caused it to register twice into the master.

My fix was to either reboot the server (Which some needed rebooting) or simply pkill salt-minion and restart it (/etc/init.d/salt-minion wouldn't restart it).

We're seeing this off numerous minions following an upgrade of the salt master. Frustrating.
