I/O to Local Files

I'm helping organize the Modeling and Analysis Challenge in the Student Program at XSEDE'14, tomorrow. The students have to use Sage notebooks, and have set up accounts on the Sage server at Clemson.
The students will want to input/output data from/to local files (on their laptops). How do they read/write between local files and their workbooks on the remote server?
Examples would be really useful.

Data files are not a supported format for Upload. The only supported file formats are flavors of worksheets.

The training today was on the Clemson server, and I don't want to change things unnecessarily. There has to be a way to get data in and out.

Open a *worksheet* and then use the "data" combo-box to upload a data file that
may be used/accessed within the worksheet. You can provide a URL, so maybe that
will be the device to get the file from a remote server.
Note the instructions about using
DATA + '<your-filename>'
as the filename to use within Sage/Python functions.
