I'm a recent user of rundeck but a long time user of LXC containers.
I've been thinking for quite a while that this upcoming LXD release could be an incredible enabler for Rundeck to manage/provision almost a limitless number of local & remote LXC containers.

Look at the CLI commands in the url:   https://linuxcontainers.org/lxd/getting-started-cli/

It would seem that Rundeck can make perfect use of the CLI syntax like below which would create a new container using an "ubuntu" os template (there are centos, fedora, debian etc avail also)

lxc launch ubuntu my-new-container

So I'm going to get back to spending some more time with Rundeck and experiment with all of this.

Any thoughts?

Hi Brian,

Sounds like an awesome idea and I agree others would find it very useful. Let us know how we can help.

Here was the video from the LXD/LXC project lead developer Stephane Graber's
presentation this morning at the Ubuntu Developers online conference.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_vRmItDORo

Its pretty feaking amazing what this LXD can do if you watch the video Stephane spins up/down, clones, live migrates LXC containers both on his local machine and on remote servers and its all a simple CLI command syntax.

You can also execute any remote command you have permissions for on the local/remote servers

This page has a lot of examples:   https://github.com/lxc/lxd/blob/master/specs/command-line-user-experience.md
