Morning all.

Does anybody have any experience working with RW100 (or similar RWxxx) read/write devices by HID? I'm looking to talk to these from a Pi, and these have RS232, USB & UART which is quite flexible.

I've been playing with libnfc talking to PN532 which works great for interrogating Mifare cards, but now need to look at production deployment so need pretty commercial wall mounted readers :)

I thought about putting PN532 breakout boards in the wall cavity with a vinyl marking on the wall to demonstrate the contact zone, but concerned future maintenance will be difficult.

No experience with HID, but RW100 aren't at all secure with Mifare
cards if that is what you are after?

Inside or out? How secure to you need it? Are you networking them?
Power (UPS)?

This is for identity only, with a key and alarm code out of hours. We've
got the bias set firmly towards identity and tracking rather than
security, security will be covered by other means.

I'm planning on securing a pi in the roof void above each door with a
cable down to the reader and mag release. these will each use some kind
of replication (undecided what yet, possibly flat files pushed with
ansible) for configuration and asynchronously log activity back to a DB
somewhere over network. They will all be on fail-open so UPS is not a
concern, though we did consider a UPS'd ring for them. Maybe later :)

Do you have recommendations other than HID? I would like to use Mifare
as the tags are cheap and there is a good variety of options for form
factors.

Can't you just put the smaller pn532 boards into a decent looking
enclosure on the wall? I'm sure you can buy something off the shelf
they will fit in nicely and look good.

For identity the RW100 + Mifare should be fine. But I would go with
fitting cheep boards in the wall or a generic enclosure. The RC522
boards seem even cheaper, ~£2, and smaller then the PN532 boards, and
are still secure read+write with Mifare devices. So long as you do a
good job soldering I can't see why you would need to service anything
but the Pi. Guess you could fit redundant ones in case they break?

Hmm sounds like a good idea.

Any idea where I could get the blank boxes?

You are waiting on HK post anyway for value readers, but the cases are
easy to get in the UK: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200967868283
