So I'm running Dura-Ace 10-speed bar end shifters (now converted to down-tube shifters) on my Atlantis, matched to an Ultegra front derailleur and an XT rear derailleur, 44/26 chain rings to 11-36 XT cassette. I'm a fan.

I'm building up a new bike right now and pondering the drive train, looking for some Riv-ish advice.

I'm running white industries ENO cranks with a 46/30 chain ring combo. I've also got a 42/24 combo for when I ride the divide in summer. Rear will be 11-36 again. But I'm looking for some derailleurs to use with 10-speed bar ends that are a little more....interesting.

I'm thinking of the first gen XTR 9-speed rear derailleur. I've seen some people running those all the way up to 11-speed friction before. So here's my question:

I understand 9 and 10 speed chains are the same internal width, with 10 speed having thinner plates. So the XTR 9-speed jockey wheels should work just fine (I originally had a Deore 9-speed derailleur on my Atlantis before it ripped in half on the oregon outback). Is anyone out there running a XTR M952 with 10-speed dura ace shifters? Think it'd work?

If not, I'm happy to entertain alternate derailleur suggestions. Something with some bling factor preferably, and not something that looks like a transformer.

Oh and my second question was where are people buying their bar end shifters from? Doesn't look like Nashbar has them anymore. I'd be happy to buy a used pair, especially if they are the slightly older 10-speed downtube version without the plastic finger pads on them

Also don't know about interesting, but Ultegra CX-70 FD will handle the front ring jump with aplomb.

Is that a top-pull only? I'm going to need one that pulls from the bottom. I'm currently using an ultegra derailleur that works pretty well. It's not terribly interesting, but it works a WHOLE lot better than the Suntour Cyclone 5-speed derailleur I had on before haha. So many dropped chains.

I've never liked Suntour FD and still consider my 600EX Arabesque the best FD I've ever used (and still use it) - it makes 26T to 42T jump I'm asking of it with aplomb.
Ultegra CX-70 FD is available either top pull or bottom pull   http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/us/en/shimano-ultegra-cx70-double-10sp-front-mech/rp-prod70123
If you hunt around, there are some really good sale prices on this part.

Cool, thanks Ron! The 600EX is a very handsome derailleur. What speed of chain were you using with it? I was having a lot of difficulty preventing my chain from dropping with the very wide cage of the 5 and 6 speed derailleurs. It seemed to just fly right off most of the time.

My Dura Ace 7410 handles the 44-to 22-tooth jump competently -- only, because of the distance to the outer ring on the mtb crankset, I had to file off the outer limit stop tab. But, having done so, it works fine, tho' this may shorten the life of the spring. Oh, and I have to be careful to use the granny only with the biggest cogs.

Il faut souffrir pour etre beau.

IMO, Dura Ace 7410 derailleurs are among the prettiest ever made, and give full aesthetic punch to a bike built with mountain bike crankset and fat tires (along with the silver Impero with Campy head).

Ok now we're talking! Great suggestion Patrick, I love that you hacked it a bit to make it work. That's true commitment to having interesting derailleurs!

My set-up is 3 x 7, and I'm running 8-sp chain.

On my Ultegra CX-70 FD (which is the new 600 EX) I'm running a 2x9 with a 9sp Wippermann chain and it's a delight - I can run the full width rear without adjusting the FD.

If you've got some parts lying around something like this may be possible.  I managed to make this work with a combination of Shimano and Silver pod parts.  I think it was a Zen moment.  Hard to say if I could recreate it or not.

Christopher, I actually did that as well! Though with the shimano pods. I had to file that little washer thing a bit, but my wife's Cross Check now has the most gorgeous bar end shifters ever. i'm actually thinking of buying new 10 spd bar ends and putting them on her bike, then stealing the ones like you have for myself, mwahaha!

Mark, adding to the CX70 FD info, it's "10-speed" and the cage is shaped for a "small big" ring - max ring size is 46T

Check out the Sun XCD derailleur, they say max 34t but we've managed to use it on a 36. It's beautiful.

I'm assuming you want indexed shifters? The Microshift bar ends are a good alternative to shimano. Riv's silver shifters are stellar if you are into friction-only.

I did this as well, using the 7700 levers and the adapter washers from Riv. This was on Noodles, and then Albastaches.

I didn't like it in the end - the shifting wasn't as silky as a straight-up Shimano 9spd BE unit, more of a BRAPP! indexing action. And in the lowest gears on the Albas, the lever would be pointing upwards into my wrist. Gah!

Well, I ended up with two pairs of shifters and a derailleur.

I bought a pair of Dura Ace 10-speed bar end shifters from Jenson USA - Thanks Ron, the price was reasonable and they had lots of other stuff I needed.

But THEN... I scored a pair of 9-speed Dura Ace 7700 9-speed downtube shifters for $20 locally. I've got a new 9-speed cassette and chain, as well as some long reach tektro brakes sitting in the parts bin, and some phil/velocity 650b wheels. All I need is a frame now, hah!

As for the derailleur, I scored a XTR m952 9-speed derailleur for $60. Not the cheapest considering a new XT 9 speed can be had for 75, but this is a cool derailleur and doesn't look like a robot. I'm happy with how this all turned out.

All I need to complete this build now is a 119 Phil BB, seat post, and front derailleur.

What's the new bike?

It's a Crust DFL, a 26"x3" dirt touring bike. Pretty cool bike I'd say. It can also run 650Bx2.5" tires, possibly even 2.8 from what I've seen online.

The frame is steel with a very interesting finish. In the dark, it looks black. But when the light hits it, blue and purple flakes in the paint start glittering and turn it into a bit of a disco ball.

I'm running it with SON28/White Industries CLD hubs, Velocity Dually polished rims, Surly Knard 3" tires. White Ind. cranks, XTR m952 rear derailleur, unknown front, dura ace bar end shifters, Soma Portola dirt drops (or June Bugs if I can find some, as I need a 31.8 bar), and a LD/Gooseneck stem. I'm having Porcelain Rocket make me a custom frame bag to match the Carradice Camper bag I've got, and plan to get a second Carradice so I have matching bags front/rear.

This will not in any way be replacing my Atlantis. If anything, I think it will complement it. I love my Atlantis and enjoy running it with fan tires, but the places I've been taking it are getting rougher and swampier it seems. I wanted something with a bigger footprint, more float (for winter in the snow), lighter (no big racks or panniers. It's really hard to lift my Atlantis over fallen trees or drag it up steep embankments) and the addition of a few Riv-Condemned modern touches....like disc brakes.

The Atlantis will probably have fenders and the fattest slicks I can find on a more permanent basis, with the real rough stuff saved for this new bike.

Ditto on the Shimani CX70 front derailers.
I have two of them now and found them to install with no problem and work well
with low 40T big rings dropping down to a 28t small ring.

That's Jenson rather than Jensen.

Does rivbike still offer?

Worth a look.

It's made by Crust Bikes. They are going on sale any day now, but you can email him for exact details at www.crustbikes.com

They are available in a few lengths but only for 1 1/8". The only way to get a threaded 1" version I am aware of is custom. Clockworks makes them.

boy I woulda liked one of those XTR derailleurs ...doing XT 9-speed dura-ace 9-speed barends for mixte..I don't want anything exotic, just something that works. Don't really like the looks of the new XT derailleurs though. Mark A @Riv is going with a CX70 front for mixte

They are sweet hey? I got that off eBay, some guy in Quebec so the price and shipping was reasonable. They seem to range from 30 (totally thrashed) to 100 (pretty darn good looking). I'm a big fan of the look. Pretty understated overall.

Yup, steel indeed. Not sure what kind, but pretty sure it's just 4130. It gives a nice 'ping!' when you flick it with your nail. Thinner steel than the Atlantis I'd say.

It should be rolling in about two weeks. Frame bag by late June. Wave me down when you see me ripping around on it!

Alex,

Did you have to make any tweaks for the Sun XCD (I assume rear derailleur) to work with a 36 rear cog? I'm planning on using it on my upcoming custom. I'm planning to pair it with the Sun XCD front derailleur as well, 10 speeds, with a René Herse 26/42 crankset. Going up to 36 in the rear would be nice.

That 90's XTR  group was gorgeous. Maybe the new stuff is more whiz-bang but aesthetically, it  doesn't sing to me...new road  cranks especially look like an elephant's trunk. One thing I do like the looks of are the CX70 cantilever breaks....silver would be nice but they are good looking in a minimalist way...and they work really well too which is the point in my opinion. I'll keep an eye out for your new bike...that stem is kinda neat looking

No mods necessary but I would guess that your chain tension and derailleur tension screw would need to be at-max.  Also, the style dropout/hanger you have might be a factor.  Our success happened to be on a Straggler.  Good luck, sounds nice so far!
