2016 Matthews "road bike for dirt" at 31.99 lb with full generous kit in frame bag, which also contains the capacitor and switching box for the K-Lite.

Dynamo lighting f and r, fenders of 2X thicker than your Honjos, with 2X thicker struts, rear rack, cages, and pedals. Not bad at all considering that the bag with its contents probably weighs close to 4 lb.

My Matthews is also much prettier than your Platypus.

Nice bike and nice background. How much does your custom weigh, and is it lighter than similar Platypuses?

Well, I don’t see how this is possible since your Matthews isn’t even raspberry.

Actually, this is very true, all else equal. I recall riding a long time ago up and back our 7-mile Tramway hill with a much lighter rider. I'm slender at 170, but he was small and slender and probably 30 lb lighter; our bikes -- me on my 1995 26" wheel Riv Road custom -- were much the same. I did pretty well uphill -- I recall using my 60" gear -- but downhill I had to keep braking (air brake) to keep from running away from him.

Of course he had to sit up and twiddle to stay with me on the climb, as this was a man who once said, "I only did 9,000 miles last year -- it was a bad year."

Leah, your Platypus is really one of the list's prettiest bikes while my Matthews can best be described as industrial. But mine is still lighter.

Misguided weight weenies, all of you.  You want a better workout?  Get a heavier bike.

I did not realize the Matthews had so many gears and cables and things hanging from its industrial frame. There's your problem.

Yes, there are times when I feel (seriously) like converting it to a single speed. But it's my one derailleur bike and I figure I need at least one of those.

If I stripped it of fenders, rack, lighting system, and bag I guesstimate the weight would drop to about 25 lb, not bad for steel and aluminum, and lighter than the typical 26-28 lb for a highish end (non-tricked) XT 26er circa 1991, despite the huge wheels.

I had to respond to you in my favorite medium, Patrick. Video. I’ll include the link below, since the file is too big. It’s on my Instagram, which I’ve set to public for now, but hurry and watch before I switch it back to private.

I am making it my new favorite thing to take these classy Rivendells and set them to edgy, tacky hit music in Reels. The purists will ask for the ban hammer. The rest of you will hopefully laugh. This video is entirely in response to these silly threads.

Leah,

That video was great!   I laughed, and cheered!    :)

I'm 6'7" tall and weigh between 230 and 260 pounds (depending upon the season) and am both amused and annoyed at the "how much does that bike weigh?" and "How can you ride such a heavy bike?" comments I get when I show up for a club ride on one of my Rivs or other steel bikes (I own no carbon). My response is "Who cares? With me on it your carbon bike might weigh 1 to 2% less than me on my bike -- and since this is a B-C club (14-16 mph) ride and not the Tour de France  it makes no appreciable difference to my riding results, but to me the comfort of my bike is well worth a possible few seconds over 50 miles."   If it is someone I don't know I then make an effort to cruise by on an uphill while trying to look like I'm extending little effort.

I also get all the style points. Rode Ragbrai last year with a good friend -- he rides carbon -- and every day lots of folks complimented my Atlantis, many wanting photos. On the last day he remarked that no one ever said anything about his bike, unlike me and the others on nice steel bikes scattered among the thousands of lookalike carbon bikes.

I say, "Just Ride!"

Leah: I laughed my head off. For an increasingly silly thread, you certainly capped it all.

OTOH, I could see you struggling to lift those behemoths.

Long ago, when my daughter was 5 or 6 (she will, God willing, turn 22 in early June), I would be horsing around and playing the fool, and she would say, very earnestly and emphatically: "Daddy! Be sewious!" I begin to understand her sentiment.

Just for the record -- as the one who started all this nonsense -- I don't fret about weight, well, with one exception, below; and I weighed the Matthews only on a momentary impulse of curiosity; the Monocog followed as a kind of academic investigation.

In fact, I fret mildly about weight only for one bike, and that is the 1999 Joe Starck Gofast Fixie Custom Road; and even on that one I chose most parts for performance or looks instead of weight -- Dura Ace SPDs instead of Look KEOS or Speedplay X-1s, Phil hubs, DA GA 200 crank with 52 ring, Surly Dingle. The only chi chi light part is (I blush to admit) a titanium stem bolt. 18 lb even. The SA TF hubs adds 11 oz and the TC much more again, an amount I've not bothered to register.

All my other bikes were built without regard for weight and range from the 28 lb Matthews #2, clone of 2003 Curt Riv Road custom with SA AM hub, to the 32 lb Matthews #1 and the Monocog at 32.25 -- all of these weighed with full kit bags of 2 or 3 lb each.

"Shot at the Platypus ... directed at a particular person"? You live in a universe different from mine.

"Point of the thread"? Absolutely none on my part except to spout a momentary interest. What was your purpose in chiming in so enthusiastically?

Sheesh!

Ok I'll cut to the chase: What is the point of the threads? They seem to be a shot at the Platypus on a Riv forum in favor of two non-Rivs, and frankly they seem directed at a particular person. I've done my best to remain unserious about the whole affair but I'm kinda stumped on what the purpose of this was.

This entire thread fondly reminds me of "It's A Walk Off" contest from Zoolander:

Hah hah ... no one has been harmed or could be harmed in the telling of this story/tale.  It's like opening a book and in the reading of it taking offense to the reading of it. Well that reminds me of a Ventriloquist who takes offense when the "dummie" speaks.

"How dare you, I mean me, say that !"
