The Entmoot/Jamboree two years ago was a fantastic, grass-roots event that everyone enjoyed and talked about for a while. It seemed like everything really fell into place (except I had to leave early) for a fantastic weekend. That enjoyable event got us thinking about something similar. We talked about it, but nothing came of it.

Fast forward to last December when Hugh, Jim, and myself made a trip to the West Point Inn, and had a phenomenal time there celebrating Jacquie Phelan's (and Philip W's!) birthday. An absolute blast.  We can't recreate those moments, but we want to have another opportunity back at the Inn with any like minded folks to celebrate life, life on a bicycle, the historical context, in one of the most beautiful storied areas I can imagine. So with Jacquie's help we are hosting a SoCal/NorCal get together in June!

We have reserved the entire facility for those two nights, and want to pack in as many people as we can. We hope many of you living in the Bay Area that we don't get to visit can make it! Maybe even some people from out of the area can make it there as well (Looking at you, PDXers)!

The costs are very reasonable. For the two nights, it is $2,400. If we can get 30 of us, it will be $80 a person. Throw in another $20-50 for Saturday night dinner and breakfast, and you're looking at a bit less than $150 at most for a unique two night experience in a very special (magical even!) place. I/we hope many of you can come.

For those not able to do the whole stay, we are planning on a Saturday ramble of a ride, followed by the above-mentioned dinner.  Thinking the Pine Mountain Loop, Repack to Fairfax to the Marin Museum of Bicycling back to the Inn. Plenty of alternative routes if someone doesn't want to do that. Just kind of a cool way to really take advantage of what the area has to offer.  So for sure, plan on being there for the ride and dinner! We'll figure out a cost per person for just the dinner, it won't be much. Won't even worry about it if it's just a few people, but hoping to get a decent sized group there.

Dinner Friday night is potluck. Sat a.m. breakfast leftovers and communal pancakes or similar. Sat lunch on your own. Sat dinner provided. Sun breakfast leftovers/communal. Pretty low key. We're hoping to have some beer provided, but everyone bring a six pack or bottle of your favorite is a way to do it as well.

Sleeping arrangements are somewhere in the range of hostel level. Four to five beds per room. Bring sheets or a bag, clean your own room, do the dishes, sweep the floors arrangement. Not plush, but it ain't camping.

Here are my pics from the weekend I was up there: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/albums/72157661872299170

Logistics to follow. Leaning toward collecting using checks vs. using Paypal. I can just sit on them and cash them all at once. For food budgeting I'd rather go over a bit on individual cost and donate any excess to the Inn (nonprofit) or to Charlie's medical expenses. Will be very transparent, but money is touchy of course. If we can't get to 30 people, the cost per person will go up accordingly.

Reminder that the Inn is a hike/bike facility only, and there is no on-site parking for guests (ADA access is available). Closest parking is at the Pantoll campground/day use area, two miles down the trail. I think parking is $8/day there.

The only thing we ask is commitment. Nobody is prepared to go back and forth with figuring out refunds, wait lists, things like that. This is a labour of love sort of thing.

So who's inn???

I wouldn't miss this one for anything, especially after hearing about what a great time you guys had at the last event & seeing the photos.  Probably go up early or / and stay over to do some other stuff in the area.  Can't wait.

Well you know I'm in.

When the Entmoot/ Riv twentieth happened I'll never forget that high. Folks from near and far converging on China Camp (Grant, Will & Jenny handing out raffle prizes) was an event like the one's you have as a youth that become a personal high water mark. I recall lister Jim Warren mentioning to me that we should have a Rivendell celebration the following year at the West Point Inn (which obviously didn't happen) at the time, I was sure Jim. But in reality I really didn't know what that would be like and what kind of effort it would require...fast forward to this past December and helping Jacquie celebrate her birthday at the the Inn was/is down right amazing! There you are on top of Tamalpais with "Billion" dollar views (Inflation don't you know) of the East Bay and the City and dirt fire road heaven at the threshold of the Inn. Inside the Inn we all converge with like minded bicycle obsessed folk imbibing the history along with spirits and food, it's like being a drug addict chasing a high but this is a high I'll gladly chase any day. Let's make some memories.

June ain't coming fast enough! See you freaks on top of Tam and bring yer knobbies.

I'm in. December was fantastic.
Even if you didn't ride more than the two miles from Pantoll, this would still be a great thing to do. Or, you could ride anywhere you wanted, and have a great base to come back to!
If you've ridden up Railroad Grade, you probably stopped at the West Point Inn for water, or a rest. You may have done that hundreds of times, and never even gone up on the porch. Now you can be the people inside the inn!

Oh man, I would just love to do this. For any of you thinking "maybe," just sign up, send in your check, and do it. The setting is awesome. Unfortunately for me, I just managed a really dumb move while riding my AHH and the doc says I won't be riding before the end of June. Of course, by then I will be all flab from no riding. Arrrrrgggghh! If I manage to heal up really quickly, I'll just hope that a slot is still open. Sigh ... And for those of you who are wondering ... no need to worry, the AHH came through without a scratch.  :-)

THANKS for bring this up... I've been meaning to bump this post again. We just had our twenty-third confirmation, with another pending. So room for four for sure, maybe six if we go up to thirty. I'm REALLY excited about the whole thing, as everything is falling into place... amazing! We have the Inn covered, and full dinner cooked by Ms. Phelan planned for Saturday night. I'm planning on getting enough people to also end up covering breakfast supplies, but it will be more informal setting.

Please also consider coming up for Saturday shenanigans, whether you stay for dinner or not. We're hoping to have a semi-organized ride to Fairfax and touring the MTB Hall of Fame/Museum there. If you would want to just hang out on Saturday, that is 110% just fine as well. In fact stay for dinner, just kick something for a WP Inn donation. We should have enough food, unless there is going to be a ton of you (let me know if there will be a ton of you).

Bay Area denizens in particular, if you haven't been to WP Inn, this is your chance to experience a really magical place with a bunch of great people in our extended bike-family!

This sounds like fun.  I'm new here (with a dark mustard Clem L-Style on order).  I also live in NY, not too far from the West Point Military Academy.  For a few minutes, I was envisioning a venue near the Hudson River and figuring out how I might attend.  How disappointing!

I bet you could put on a pretty good ride along the Hudson!!! Even get some cross-continental pollination!

There should be some great possibilities in the Hudson Valley.  I've gotta get used to some new, high-end hip components, get back on a bike for the first time in a couple of years, and then we will see!

That's very funny, same thing happens to me every time I see this post. Beacon is just a few miles north of the academy,  on the other side of the Hudson River. I think we have enough of a Hudson Valley contingent, plus NYC Bobs are only a train ride away. Wait, getting my lists confused. Anyway, enough RBW/BoBs whatevers to do, if not a full on sleepover, at least a sympatico East Coast Rivish Ride that weekend. If we get real ambitious, we could end up here:

http://www.thewestpointmotel.com/

Not quite the renowned rep of the West Point Inn, but hey, we New Yorkers can roll with it.

Are there defined plans for the Saturday ride? Like when to be where, how long and hilly it is, etc.?

I'm trying to make plans to show up for that ride, but need to start working on family logistics. And, of course, which bike to bring!

Yes, definitely! Glad this topic came back around, I've been meaning to talk it up a bit now that the date is closer.

Space for the whole weekend as well as the above-mentioned Saturday ramble.

Anyone who wants to commit with their hard-earned cash, just pm me at the cyclotourist gmail address.

And we're lighting up the no vacancy sign! Every bed is accounted for, which is pretty awesome! Working on menu items and Saturday route options.

Saturday is 114% an open ride, we hope many of the locals can come out and ride around Marin with us for the day. Most likely riding trails from WPI down to Fairfax, touring the MTB museum, then meandering back up the hill. A casual pace will be maintained!

Dinner is being cooked by Jacquie that evening, and everyone can join in on that, whether they are spending the night or not. It's encouraged and hoped for, actually!
More details to follow!

Thanks to all who jumped on-board for this, it's actually falling into place perfectly!!!

There are two spots available in an inside room if anyone was on the fence and dissuaded by my previous post...

I will probably rent a car on Friday from SFO, spend the one Friday night at West Point Inn (if it’s available to me), go on the ride on Saturday and get back to my car by around 4pm so I can pack it up and get to Oakland Airport (return car) and fly out by 8pm.

Hi Folks,

I wanted to throw out this ride as a potential Saturday ride from the Inn and back with a stop at the Marin Museum of Bicycling. At first glance it looks like a formidable ride 32 miles and 6200' elevation but we have all day to do this ride. I purpose we bring a lunch with us and eat out on the trail. Of course not all are up for a ride like this. I encourage folks to chime in with a plan "B" and "C" route(s) maybe a bail out on my route where we all meet at a specific time at the museum for a tour and a really mellow ride staying closer to the Inn.

Without further fanfare here's the route.
