Congratulations on your AHH. I don't have that model (yet) but I've seen pictures of some spectacular ones. Please make sure you send pictures when you get it. Some folks even photograph the box as it's being delivered, the unboxing, the build process, and so forth (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157631702162963/). We do like to see how well they were packed (superbly if you got it new from RBW).

And yes, it's totally normal not to sleep, to look through windows to see if the delivery guy is there yet, to lose focus on other things, so on and so forth.  I've gone through this twice (Quickbeam, Hunqapillar) so take it from me, your reaction is normal. :-)

Eagerly awaiting pictures,

Bob

Hi,

Have been reading the post year for about a month.

Just bought a AHH.  Should have my hands on it next week.  Is is normal not to sleep so well due to anticipation of a new bike?

I ride mostly on the poorly mainatained roads in the San Diego East County.  Any recommendations for tires would be helpful.  I would also like to hear about any recommendations for places to ride this bike in and around San Diego.  Thanks.

Not sleeping well is definitely a sign that you did the right thing ordering an AHH!

I just swapped the 35mm Marathon Supremes I had on my AHH for a pair of 30 (32 according to Jan) Gran Bois Extra Leger tires and I have to say that the change completely revamped the feel of the bike. Since I'm heavy I have to pump them hard (75F/90R) even though the online calculator would have me go even higher. The ride, however, is superb if a bit harsher than my bikes that have 40 and 50mm tires inflated to lower pressures. It also rides very well on dirt roads.

I'm going to be doing a side by side comparison with the 35 Supremes and perhaps some other highly recommended similar width tire since I have almost identical wheelsets (only the hubs are different) to try to understand how real-to-me the differences are. I'm running Honjo fenders on that bike.

Not sure how this applies to your actual road conditions, but I'm sure you're going to be getting many suggestions from the list.

If Rock'n'Road tires fit the AHH, I'd make sure to give them a try. I have a pair yet to be mounted, but was thinking I'd use them on my Atlantis that can take wider tires than the AHH.

Welcome Curtis,

I've got a Homer http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedalpusher61/8419648542/in/set-72157632622749622 and didn't get a bunch of sleep prior to it's arrival nor much afterwards. Your reaction is normal. You're in luck SoCal has many great places to ride and IMHO East county S.D. has a lot to offer. I particularily like rides through Ramona , Julian and the Laguna Mountains I'm actually planning on doing a S240 this Summer in the Laguna' with my Brother. I lived down there for about 15 years and most of my Family is down there.

There is a SoCal group that has been getting together for rides here is the Flickr link: http://www.flickr.com/groups/socal_rivendell_bicycle_appreciation_society/
Just jump in on the discussion when we plan a ride.

If I had just one set of tires to buy in 650b then it's the Fatty Rumpkins:http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/t105-10086.htm unfortunately no one makes a knobby in 650b with a width between 38 to 42 mm. But I have taken them on hardcore single track and jeep trails.

The Schwalbe's are a favorite for many as their pretty durable. Don't get me wrong the Fatty's are durable too but I need more data points to give a 100% reccomendation. http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/t001.htm

I also run the Grand Bois Hetres http://www.compasscycle.com/tires_gb_650_42.html mostly on pavement and light dirt roads, though others say they use them on gravel roads.

Now if your running a Homer with 700c hoops them others will make recommendations.

Again Welcome aboard! And post pics when you get your steed.

Best,

Hugh

Hi Curtis,

I live in North County (Carlsbad) and also ride with the SoCal Riv group that  Hugh mentioned. I'm most familiar with North County as I've only lived here about 18 months. There are  some nice areas to ride north of Escondido to Rainbow and the Rancho Santa Fe area.

There a lot more choices for 700C tires,if that is what you are getting, depending on you if  ride mostly on pavement or like dirt roads mixed in your travels.

Congrats on the Homer, they are beautiful and versatile bikes.

Curtis:

Congrats on the new bike.  These guys will overwhelm you with great tire suggestions (which can lead to lively discussions) but my advice is "run what you brung".  Mostly this works but was sub-optimal on last weekends Loch Leven sand / gravel / rock sections.  Pay attention if David mentions "knobbies".  My Atlantis is currently shod with 40mm Vittoria Rando Hypers which ride nice but proved a bit light for the loose stuff.

With Mike in Carlsbad & me in southern Orange County, do I sense a Fallbrook - Escondido - Elfin Forest - ??? loop or perhaps Mt Palomar in the future?  Stick with us, we'll get you lost for sure.

Curtis, congrats on the new bike. You're gonna love it. Tire choice for the Hilsen can be tough given the range of tires. I've tried so many different tires--Jack Browns, green and blue, Paselas (32, 35), Schwalbe Marathon Supremes (35) and a range of Marathons--32s, 35s, 38s, 40s, and even 47s. I go back and forth on tires depending on what time of riding I'm doing. I think the Supremes are a great way to go in that they're large volume, roll smoothly and are extremely durable. While the Marathons can feel sluggish they are durable and are great for mixed terrain riding. The nice thing about the Marathons are that they're rather inexpensive. Panaracer T-Serves are also nice tires, a bit more durable than Paselas.

Another confounding issue for the Hilsen, what type of bag or bags to put on it? Racks?

Here's pictures of my Hilsen which I've had for almost 5yrs now.

Be sure to post pictures of yours when it arrives.

I run 35mm Vittoria Hyper Randos on my AHH and like them very much.

Since you just dropped a bundle on a very nice bike there is always the question of what the check book looks like.  If there's something left, then the next best thing you can do is treat yourself to really good tires.  I used Pasellas and Tservs for commuting but wouldn't recommend them for joy riding.  The JBs give a very good mix of performance, comfort and protection.  I run the Grand Bois Cerf on my Ram and have loved the performance, with no flats.  Most of my rides include some dirt and some bad chip and seal, so I certainly don't baby them.  I would bet the larger size on the AHH would be a really good choice.

Thanks for the advice.  The bike is a used AHH that was recently put up for sale on this site.  The price and size was right and I had been looking for a few months.

I think that I will have to try a few types of tires to find what works for me.  I appreciate the recommendations and will follow the advice give here.

So there is a Southern California group?  How fun it would be to ride with a Riv type group.  I do a lot of backpacking and would like to do some bike packing.

Congrats on being a new AHH owner.  I got mine about 4 months ago, so as other's have said your reaction is completel normal :)
As far as tires go, I originally had the 35mm Marathon Supremes, but recently switched out the the Jack Browns, Blue in back and Green in front.   I like the Jack Brown's better for type of riding I do the most:  on road, chip and seal.

A very underrated tire is the Performance Bike shop's Forte Metro 700x35 with or w/o kevlar strips.  Yeah, cheap store brand tires right ?  HaH !  Think again !!  There's real psychological game that one often assumes a "more expensive" tire MUST be better than one that is "cheap/-er".  Here's a real good example. Performance sells a tire called the Gotham for $16. It's made by Panaracer and sold with their brand name as the Crosstown, sells for $40 ! Some people will buy the same thing with a higher price tag just because it's more expensive ...lol. Hah !  So while the Metro tires may be "only" $15 , don't let that fool you, they grip well, have low rolling resistance and are supple feeling to me. Maybe they are not a Grand Bois or whatever .... maybe they are ... lol.   Take the visual perception off a tire and a blind comparison test would be very interesting indeed .

I'm starting to be antsie about my rain gear arriving, and it doesn't ship for 2 more weeks, then it has to swim here from Scotland. I'm pretty sure my family was ready to send me out bikepacking without the bike I was so nuts waiting for my Hunqapillar. Yeah, hankering for quality gear you only have to buy every few decades or a lifetime is normal, if you're smart enough to save for and purchase such gear. It never seems to come in a way that satisfies instant gratification. Part of the craftsman ethos, I suppose. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

I can't see cheaping out on tires, personally. I think the piece of mind that comes with riding on quality rubber is worth it. Overpaying for nothing is silly, admittedly but getting the right tire can make or break the ride and feel of a bike.

Completely agree. And when you look at how much everything on a bike
costs, the difference between a great tire and a so-so tire is pretty
small.

Great tire for Homer = Grand Bois Cypres. I have a pair in reserve waiting for the current pair on my Homer to wear out. Also like Jack Brown greens. 90% road 10% gravel commute for me.

Definitely Grand Bois Cypres or Grand Bois Extra Leger.  Cypres have been amazing tires for me the past three years.  Comfortable and only one flat riding on mix of Chicago city streets, suburban streets and roads, paved and lime stone paths.

Bought a set of Extra Legers this year and Cypres under the so far incorrect notion the Extra Leger may be too frail for my riding.  The Cypres ride is sublime, Extra Leger other worldly.  All the wonderful things you get from tubulars without the hassle.
