20 miles -- no biggy; but I had no errand to run, so I took the gofast. The Elk Pass tires are so nice; I can detour onto dirt, firm dirt and light gravel, if I like -- despite their weight of 175 grams. Not that gofast bikes need to have this capacity; but it is nice to have it when the tires that allow it are the fastest pavement tires I've ridden (this is a seat of pants/leg torque/cadence estimate). In fact, saying that gofasts have to be dirt capable is like saying a racing car has to have a trunk.

Anyway: sunny, breezy, temps over 60F -- very nice; a detour for a couple of minor hills -- living in The Valley as I do, hills have to looked for.

The point, if this divagation has a point: I'm glad I have a gofast! Everyone ought to have one as one of the statutorily minimum 4 bikes in their stable. Fully kitted commuting or errand bike; check. Dirt bike; check. Beater; check. Gofast.

I:

'03 Riv: errands.
'02: gofast.
Race Lite and hopefully forthcoming Matthews: dirt.
Dahon: beater.

Patrick,
My go fast or slow fast is my Roadeo. With the 28 Grand Bois Cerfs, I can wander off road once in awhile and not lose anything on pavement. The other thing is that I am so tuned to the Riv handling that other brands just do not inspire me.

I like your statutory minimum 4 proposal... Mostly because of conveniently aligns to my own stable!

Saluki - commuter, all round
Bombadil - singletrack fun-coaster, commuter alternate
XO-3 - 'beater' (in the most endearing way), single speed
Bob Jackson - go fast

Is a fat bike somehow both implied and outside of the 'statutory minimum 4'? :)

I was surprised how much I really enjoyed and continue to enjoy the stripped down 32mm tired Jackson...

My no-name electric-pedal-assist folder is the shopper with folding baskets.
Bike Friday NWT and Riv CLEM are sorta tour-ish, but light and fast.
My only 700c skinny-ish tire go-fast is a KHS hybrid with a high power electric kit. It goes FAST ;)

My local LBS told me they had their floor demo Cannondale electric hybrid bike up to 40mph in their parking lot.

Most before work rides these days are on my gofast Trek 660. I love it! I rode up the canyon today and was treated to two red tailed hawks riding the thermals. I thought to myself that's what I feel like on this bike, like I'm flying but err on the ground. Now i want a hawk in flight headbadge.

Robin Williams said that riding a bike was the closest you could get to flying. On a nice back road with no cars around I definitely agree.

My go fast is a 1980's Proteus recently brought back to life after sitting for 10 years due to a bent fork. I think after sitting all this time it wants to fly too.

I agree with Robin but then there's this. Just a bit closer to our feathered friends.

My go-fast is the Roadeo I picked up a couple weeks ago, used to be a Giordana (I swapped the parts over).
Road/tour: Riv Road Standard 650b
Off-road/tour:  Schwinn KOM-10 with drop bars
Off-road:  Foundry Auger
Way off-road:  Specialized Fatboy

All my bikes are commuters, all but the Roadeo are fendered.

Redwood - unconverted recently, meaning back to 700c from 650b - Barlow Pass tires make this go smooth & fast
Clem - commuting duties, grocery getting
84 Schwinn Voyageur - faux-rando, single speed
Trek 330 - 650b'd, needs to be built back up, but certainly go-fast contender
BMC Monster Cross - coming soon, undecided in build, but most likely a single/fixed with mixed terrain tires

I love my go fast bike, which is my Roadeo. I did not ride it last night outside, but rather have it hooked up to a stationary trainer in the house, which I rode for an hour. Winter is my mountain bike time and I stuck a trainer tire on the Roadeo for a month or two until it warms a little. I don't really ride the Roadeo on dirt or gravel unless I hit a bad road while wandering around. I'm currently riding 25mm tires on it and I cannot complain about being held back on speed with this Riv.

So, I currently have 4 ride-able bikes.

Roadeo - Go fast road bike
Atlantis - Touring bike
Trek Fuel EX 29'er - Full suspension trail bike
Niner Sir9 - Rigid Single speed XC bike

I need to get a bunch of parts and wheels sold off because I would kinda dig a Riv mountain bike, but that Sir9 is way cool, being steel.

I went fast today on my hunqapillar with clothes in the rear panniers in case the road allowed me to climb higher before turning into packed slick ice that I never ever trust drivers on, especially on a steep curvy canyon road. Turned around and went really fast on my underinflated 2.1" Thunder Burts (they needed to be this for the minagerie of textured frozen slush trail on the way up, before getting to the "back" roads off the highway (which I only ride down hill)). Did a grocery run ont he way home. Come spring, summer, and fall my go fast is my Quickbeam. Grin. Rivendells are awesome!

With abandon,
Patrick

The only reason he grew the beard longer is for the air drag so the rest of the peloton could keep up.

So long as we're on the topic of go-fasts... what front chainring setups are people using?  I've been eminently satisfied w/ the standard Riv'ish setup of a ~46-36-23ish on triples and am very happy w/ my 45 1x on my Saluki...  But given that I'm limited to a 5 spd rear on my 120mm rear OLD go fast I am sticking to a triple and have found a couple times 46 seems a bit light in the front.  I'm more than satisfied on most rides but I have been wondering about stepping up to the 48 or 50T in the front.

Also right now my granny is un-usable due to a bent up ring so I could really go w/ 2-3 new rings at the same time.  What do you run on your go fast?

I just swapped out to a 46-38-24 w 12-28 7spd on my go fast, from a 50-38-26 &11-28 as a winter project. I felt like the 50t was overkill and I was swapping cranks for other reasons so I thought I'd give it a try. I don't have any real riding time on this setup yet but on a steep downhill I missed the easy slow spin to keep up the speed (I probably should have just enjoyed the coast). I may put the 11t back on.

My other lightweight zippy bike is a Rawland Stag with 43-29 and 11-34 9spd. I coast or spin the downhills on that one and that's OK too! I really like the simpler shifting of the double.

I select my gears, then choose the mix of rings and cogs I need to get them. For a "gofast" road bike ("fast is very relative) I like a 65", 70", ad 75" right in the middle of the cogset. If I can get close steps with a ~40" low and a ~80-to-90" high, I'm happy.

On my erstwhile Ram I got these gears in 2 ways: first with a 44/30 subcompact crankset and a 14-15-16-17-18-20-23 7 speed, with the 44 positioned for use with all cogs. After buying a very pretty 7410 crankset, I did much the same with a compact ("-") 52/38 and a 16-17-18-19-20-21-22-24-27 9 speed. The gaps with the bigger rings weren't as efficiently spaced, for my needs, whence the 9 instead of the 7. But the crank was so pretty, I had to use it.

I realize that my gearing choices indicate certain obsessive compulsive tendencies.

Patrick "hopes to go for a nice Prez Day ride on his 75" gofast with a 66" on the flip side" Moore, in sunny, warm ABQ, NM.
