$2300
. 50cm Cheviot, green in excellent condition with less than 500 miles. Built from a frame with Rivendell-like parts and some upgraded fancy bits and additional parts. Wheels shod with Rock and Road tires which are wonderful on street and off-road. Don't really want to let go of this bike but I need the funds to buy an Atlantis.

Paul Racer centerpull brakes (black)

Chrystal Fellow seat post

Brooks Saddle

Thin Gripster pedals

Mark's rack: front with basket

Pletcher rack: rear with TechLine light (battery)

Hi Kellie,

Could I ask as a favor that you send me a photo of the rear brake including the cable stop on the top tube? I thought I couldn't use a rear Racer brake on my Betty, but you've opened my eyes. I just want to see how the cable yoke and cables look.

Thank you!

René

Jealous! The only bike that makes me a bit covetous is a Cheviot! Congrats. Tell us more!

Phillip: you're absolutely right. I love the Cheviot. The problem is the very first Rivendell I wanted was the Atlantis but told myself I couldn't afford it. I started with a Hillborne and then got the Cheviot. The Hillborne now belongs to my daughter and in the back of my mind the Atlantis was always lurking. Anticipating more riding time, I finally bit the bullet! I was also very lucky to get a used Saluki for longer, load-free rides. I think these 2 bikes will serve me well for many years to come.

Sounds like the familiar. I got the Hillborne, then the Cheviot, but I've always had my eyes on the Hunq. Sprang for it, and don't regret it one bit!

I had some trouble with setting up the cockpit, but finally settled on the dirt drops.

Thanks Bruce. like I said I feel like I have everything covered. Saluki: road, load-free for my longer rides and Atlantis for basically everything else, including long, off-road, loaded rides. I'm eyeing the GAP and C&O soon (and dream of sections of the Divide).

Thank you! I'm very excited to get it. I was seriously thinking about a Cheviot pre-order but I didn't like the current colors. I just got an orange Sam so that was out and I have two ti bikes so the gray didn't appeal and the blue didn't move me. So, I was thinking of biting the bullet and getting a custom paint job. However I always loved the old green color. When Kellie posted that she was looking for an Atlantis I asked about the Cheviot she was mentioning would have to go to fund that purchase. Well everything fell into place snd we are both happy gals!

René: here's the photo you asked for. This is the "top tube," the top of the picture is towards the head tube. See the little black gizmo? That holds the cable in place which ends at the straddle cable yoke. The photo in my first post shows how the seat tube goes between the straddle cable.

Thanks Kellie, is that gizmo something special to with a unique function? I'm not sure I get what it is or what it does exactly.

That looks like a cantilever straddle cable hanger. There are lots of different types available.

On that Cheviut, the straddle cable holder is right behind the cable housing stop and a short section of housing has been used between the housing stop and the cable hanger. A full length brake cable has been used as the straddle cable.

The Compass Cycles staddle cable hanger is super nice to use. https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/components/brakes/rene-herse-straddle-cable-hanger/

The cable hanger isn't the part René is asking about. You can actually use any yoke though I'd recommend a wide one so it easily goes around the seat tube. I considered Paul's Moonie but what I had has worked fine. The necessary part is what the brake cable goes through at the cable stop. It has to fit into the cable stop but not slide all the way through and stay in the stop. I'm not sure brake housing will work.

I see it now - I was looking at it on the iPhone at first.  It looks like a bit of housing liner with some curious ends that stop the liner migrating.  Intriguing.

On the Wilbury, there is no rear cable stop on the top tube. So right now, I'm assuming that centerpulls don't need it and in the case of the Betty and Cheviot, since the rear cable stop is needed for the side pull brakes, you either bypass it entirely as long as the cable doesn't rub it, or just need something to guide the cable and preventing from marring the paint on the cable stop.

Joe Bunik has some metal gizmo he used on his Cheviot; Joe, can you explain what you used and any other details?

It's all starting to make sense.

The braze-on is correct for the segment of cable housing to go from it to the rear side-pull brake. And it's offset to the left side slightly, just like on diamond frames to facilitate the cable routing.

Option one, which I'll check, is to run the cable straight to the yoke for the centerpull rear brake bypassing the blaze-on entirely, assuming it doesn't rub it.

Option two is to figure out the gizmo/router/guide like Kellie and Joe Bunik have done to route the cable through the braze-on.

Irrespective of which brake you use, the segment between the two braze-one has the cable running naked.

The Cheviot rear brake braze-ons are designed for side pulls. Most older mixtes with side pulls put them on the seat stays, not the mixte stays, which necessitates an unfortunate routing that leaves the open end of the cable housing pointing straight up to the elements. Mixtes designed for center pulls usually have one braze on up at the top like the Cheviot to accept the housing from the handlebar, and then it is a straight shot to the cable hanger, no second braze on. For Dia Compes and their ilk, a special longer straddle cable is needed to get around the seat tube properly. It looks like the Pauls have one end that gets cut, so it probably comes long enough.

I could see why that doodad might be necessary, as the braze-on looks like it may not be offset enough to let the cable run cleanly into the straddle hanger, and it would probably pop out without it, and then rub  up against the braze-on. Thought due to the offset, the cable does appear to take a bit of a curve into the hanger. If you knew you were keeping the bike forever (or even if not) my tendency might be to remove that lower braze-on, after first running the cable to the side. Hard to tell from photo, but might just clear it.

How would you remove the braze-on without damaging the top tube?

There are several ways to do it, but yes, the top tube paint would need to be touched up. Since this is the RBW forum, and the bike in question is a lovely Rivendell, I withdraw my suggestion to remove the braze-on! (But if someone were really interested, they might contact Patrick "Pass the dremel" Moore off line. Me, I would use a hack saw and a file to be safer. But as mentioned would see how things line up bypassing the braze-on before resorting to this. It could also affect the no warranty warranty, I imagine, so only for the committed and brave.)
