There was a query yonder on the FB about specific editions of the Rivendell Readers. (They were requesting RR#10, RR#41 and RR#42).

Turns out that the latter two had been uploaded to a Cyclofiend.com archive folder.  Toward the end of the Reader run, they would make a PDF version of the readers available in addition to the print version. And I stashed these two here -

As i was searching to see if there were more of these around, I came across the references and a thread to the sethdot.org project to set up a Reader archive. I have to say that saddened me a bit, as I realized how long it had been since Seth Vidal left us way too soon. Sigh. He was quality guy who I am sad to say I never got to meet in person.

Since my own collection of early Readers had been a bit sporadic (I had enjoyed the first ones via copies borrowed from someone else, since returned), I had bought the first CD of Readers way back when.  This included RR#'s 1 through 11.  (Yes, it went up to 11...) Since surprisingly fewer computers these days even can swallow CD's, I thought it prudent to copy these to a dropbox folder, which should be accessible via this link for now -

I'll add to this thread as more items are unearthed.

- Jim

Hey Jim,

I have numbers 12 through 35 as PDFs. I’ve been hoping to share them, but didn’t feel great about doing so without Grant’s permission. I emailed him to ask a while ago, but never heard back. (No surprise, he’s busy!)

I’m torn. I’d love to help out and make all these great stories and useful information available, but I’m not really sure they’re mine to give... Thoughts?

Best,
Reed

Probably a more well thought-out consideration...

I'd ask him again. Though if he catches this thread and wants to comment here, that would be good.

There were those cork (?) flash drives which had the pdf's.  Though since I had a stack of the print versions, I never thought to buy one.

If you get the OK, let me know - be happy to land those in the same folder for now and host the archive.

Totally reasonable. I've dropped Grant another line asking. I didn't want to be a pest, but I suppose asking twice in six months probably isn't all that bad.

I feel conflicted! I gladly downloaded the PDFs you posted, Jim, as it nearly completes my collection. Happy to do my part and share mine as long as I know no feelings will be hurt and no $$ will be lost over at RBW HQ.

Heard back from Grant, and it sounds like he's fine with it! Here's what I've got:

Includes RR 12 - 35 from CDs I picked up at RBW HQ a while back, 1-11 that Jim just posted, and 41-43 from when Riv made them available on the web a while back.

Anyone have digital copies of 36 - 40 or 44? I'd be happy to add them and complete that collection.

Reed

FWIW - I may have .pdfs of the first couple/three BOB newsletters when Grant was with Bridgestone. They set the stage for Readers to come, and are just as much fun. I don't have access until the weekend, but will pass them along when I do unless someone beats me to it.

What a fantastic and delightful gift! Thank you, first and foremost, to Grant and Co. for generiously sharing these. Like others, I never downloaded them before because I didn’t want to infringe. Thank you Jim, Reed, Tim, and Shoji for putting this together (and any who add the missing prequills or #40, and possibly #44). Seeing the photo on the cover of #43, that is right when I was researching bikes to see if I might be able to ride one. That photo is iconic for me, as it eppitimizes the riding I’d hoped to do (and now, I DO! Sweet!). I look forward to reading these over time, but delighted already in gems like “lugite” and “When Band-Aids came in tins” (wow, did that rubber smell come back!). Thanks again!

With abandon,
Patrick

Pretty certain there was / is. There's a listing on the Riv site, though sold out: https://www.rivbike.com/products/rivendell-reader-44

Looks like it came out around January 2016:

Over two years ago! Almost two and a half...

Never seen a digital copy, though. It's too new for CDs or cork drives.

I must have a copy somewhere. Maybe someday I'll scan it...

Thanks to all of you. That’s a great thing to have accessible. Next: the coffee table book!

Apropos of nothing, except that I forgot about it until just now - in the elevator this morning, a guy asked about the Biketinkers Union patch on my Brand V grabsack (purse). I said, “Oh that’s my thing. I like to tinker with bikes, modify them, make them better, or more like I like them. I made these patches and I sell them to my friends.”
He said, “Oh, are you into like Rivendell?”
I said, “Oh yeah. Pretty deep into Rivendell. That was a good guess!” And then it was his floor.

Thanks for your efforts and for Grant for the 40 and 44.

As for the complete bit, Issue 44 has this to start the first paragraph:  "When Rivendell Reader 0 was mailed in 1994, ..."  Was that a typo or is there an issue zero?

THere was a Zero, mailed in December, a warm yellow color and a few pages saying something like, "Not sure this will work, but .." It was mailed to 3,900 Bridgestone Owners Bunch (BOB) members--kind of the precursor to our current customer/mailing list. In the last year of Bstone, lots of the fun good stuff there was sitting unsold bc bike dealers didn't want it (wool jerseys, XO-1's..) and rather than discount it below cost to clear the shelves, I suggested we sell it direct to people who did want it. So BOB was formed, with a newsletter called the BOB Gazette. It went on for a year or so, we sold bike stuff, The Song of Hiawatha, and the last of the world's professional grade horsehide baseballs, and other stuff. When Bstone announce closing down, I asked for the BOB mailing list, the 3,900, as part of my going away package (I'd copied it on a floppy just in case...), and boss said Yes, and that's how it went.

Thank you again, Reed, Grant, and everybody who helped.

I keep thinking about the coffee table book idea, and how great it would  be.  I would sure buy one.   Wouldn't it be great if we could get enough commitments to do a limited-edition bulk publishing and give the profits back to Rivendell.  Perhaps like a present, to them from us, for their upcoming 25th anniversary?

I still look through my random and sparse collection of old readers on a regular basis, but I haven't been able to make myself read them on line or in electronic format yet.   Seems counter-intuitive to the whole Riv experience in some way.   I like the analog, tactile nature of dogeared pages and tattered covers.

Most of the readers have a few articles that would be natural candidates for elimination, if it was necessary to make a coffee table book size more manageable:   Mail from specific customers, reviews of non-riv products that may no longer exist, profiles of specific customer's businesses, etc., etc.

Can anybody think of a way to do a crowd-sourced editing and anthology compilation effort?  We'd need Grant's blessing on the concept and final material, of course.  Oh, and I vote to make MartyG's headbadge poster the cover.

Thank you Reed and Grant, and all others who contributed, for making this incredible resource available.  I haven't read many Readers as I am relatively new to the Rivendell family.  I was aware of Riv in 1995, but not the Readers.  Yesterday I had some time away from home, so managed to read some of #2 on my phone.  Not the best way, but still possible.  I  found the day-by-day journal piece to be particularly....telling?   Anyway, the index file sounds like it will be a great addition.  I'm looking forward to reading more.  Cheers, Steve

Thanks for doing this.  I started reading them today and enjoyed Grant's view into starting a business, with the financial worries that come with it.  I've tried being a good customer for a few years and feel a bit guilty that I doubt I will buy any big ticket items from him again, now that I have a frame and wheelset on the way.  I am, however, interested in what future Sackville bags will be created.  I'm not a big fan of saddle bags, but the front trunk sacks have been great.  I wish I did not miss the large rear trunk sacks, but have managed to find a green one.

While I agree in principle, maybe we should ask Reed about notfine.com, where he is hosting the files. You know, just in case, this is a temporary holding zone…simply because the content of interest are the files.

So, Reed, what do you say?

Thanks for asking Benz. I’m happy to keep hosting the files there for as long as I’m around, which will hopefully be a good long time. The cost of hosting them is negligible, and I’m happy to cover it.

Please feel free to link, sticky, download, and otherwise share. If anyone wants to do anything unusual with them (sell them for a profit, print them in a book, change the content, etc) i would suggest you check with Grant first, please.

Otherwise, please just read and enjoy!

Best,
Reed
