I really wish Riv would have kept the stack number listed on the geo chart. For me felt like the most accurate way of sizing the frame, way better than seat tube on the upslopers...

It's the vertical distance between the center of the crank and the top(?) of the head tube, so it gives some idea of how tall the front end will feel. I emphasize "some idea" because factors like BB drop, frame reach, head and seat tube angles, etc. can make the same stack number feel wildly different...and that's before you even move the quill stem up/down!

Ok so stack is vertical distance BB to top of headtube, reach is horizontal distance BB to top of headtube. Is that right?

Yes. The center of the BB, and the center of the top of the head tube.

It’s a useful system to compare different bikes, together with head tube and seat tube angles.

You can compare the bikes on graph paper. Or, it’s not hard to create a Photoshop file with a scaled photo of your bike, and then on another layer, superimpose another bike. The stack and reach figures will help you put them relatively close in the same X and Y space. Although not perfect, this method will determine the handlebars and stem length needed to create similar fits between bikes.
