RH is out and so are the other vendors I checked.

Does anyone know a source?

Again, SKF, 126 mm, JIS.

If anyone has one to sell, I’m very interested.

If I can’t find one I’ll probably ask Phil to mail me a 126 mm spindle but I do want an SKF. At least 1 Phil out of a score has gone bad too quickly, and I don’t get more than 15K miles out of my other Phils, so I would prefer to try an SKF.

“Nother question: Is there another bb bearing assembly in 126 mm JIS that is anywhere near as good as SKFs are reputed to be? — Someone recently reported putting 20K miles on an SKF without any problems and it’s still going strong. That’s what I want.

126 JIS = perfect; 127 mm works; 125 mm might work if laterally adjustable.

Thanks.

FWIW, The only cartridge BB I has fail was a Tange LN-3922, made in Japan. So much for origins ......  Meanwhile the Shimano UN series just keeps on spinning and I can't say how many miles. But for the $15 I paid for them, that buys many of them in contrast to a high falootin' bottom bracket, which guarantee you nothing in durability terms. Phil bearings on their BB's can be user replaced though can't they ? Despite what they may claim. Also, where the bearings or races really corrupt, or did they simply need some cleaning and grease, popping off the seals yourself ?

Any bearing assembly is a crap shoot. I'm still running the orignal bearing on a Specialized cartridge bearing hub from the mid 80's. I cleaned repacked it once. It's a superior design to purely exposed cartridges as it also has a metal shield over the bearings. But I know, we're talking BB's here.

In summary, my premise is the inexpensive Shimano BB's get terrific mileage for the price. This was with the UN54/55/70 series, I can't speak to he newer 300 series.  No, one doesn'gt always get what one pays for ans everyone knows it. One "payz what theyz pays, so to speak, no guaranteez".

Thanks, Nick and Garth. In fact, I learned that RH hopes to restock the SKF in 126 within a month or so, so I will hold out for that period.

Question: The SKF bb has cups with integral shoulders. I take it that this means that if you want to offset the spindle a couple of mm to the right (I think that the SKF is symmetrical) I will need 2 mm of spacers on the drive side?

Harry: Thanks for this.

Possible advantage of 1 SKS over 5 Tanges? Not having to change it for the rest of my life.

But will you own the bike for the rest of your life?  Honestly, I have 20-year-old Shimano BBs that I am just now replacing.  Would I pay 5x their price to get a 100 year BB?  No.

I do indeed plan to own the bike for the rest of my life, which rest is not that long since I am within a few months of 70. I’d much rather pay a few more $$ for a bb that I can install and forget than save a few $$. Remember, I have twice had to deal with creaks and clunks from a Stronglight (albeit with aftermarket cups) installed just a few hundred miles ago, and replaced a new Phil after fewer than 2K miles.
