FS: Rivendell Hunqapillar (54 cm)

Complete bike price: $1500 + buyer pays shipping

Location: San Diego, CA

Preparing for a move, so I’m selling my Hunqapillar.  This is the single top-tube variety, frame size = 54 cm.  This size worked well for me (5’10”, PBH = 83).  The bike was purchased new from Riv in 2012, and assembled by me.  Ridden about 3000 miles total.  Frame was rust-proofed with Boeshield prior to installation.  Always kept indoors.  Frame is in good shape, just a few very small nicks here and there from use.  Never in any crashes.

This bike is very versatile, I originally had it built up as a fast road bike, with drop bars and skinny-ish tires.  It is currently in a Cruiser configuration with fat tires (2.1” Schwalbe ThunderBurts) and an upright riding position (Nitto Choco-Moose handlebar).  I prefer simple shifting systems, so this is bike is currently in a 1x8 configuration.  If you want to go back to a 2x8, just add a chainring, front derailleur, and shifter.

Here is the parts list:
Frame: Rivendell Hunqapillar, 54 cm

Handlebar: Nitto Choco-Moose

Grips: ODI Rogue lock-on

Shifter: Sunrace 8-speed M90 thumb shifter

Crankset: Sugino XD2 double (inner = 34t, outer = chainguard), 170 mm length

Cassette: 8-speed 11-32t

Rear Derailleur: Shimano Deore LX T661

Pedals: MKS Lambda (Grip-King)

Wheels: 29-inch Velocity Synergy, 36-spoke

Tires: 2.1” Schwalbe ThunderBurts, folding bead (nearly new, < 200 miles)

Brakes: Tektro CR720 cantilever

Brake Levers: Tektro “Mountain”, silver

Seatpost: Nitto S83

Saddle: Brompton extra-wide

Kickstand: Greenfield

I can add or subtract parts, just let me know what you want.  I can also throw in extras, such as a small saddle bag, a bottle bracket-mounted pump (Lezyne Road Drive), some extra tubes, bottle cages.

The front brake is currently using a fork-mounted brake hanger, which gives a much cleaner look than the standard headset-mounted brake hanger.  I still have the headset mount and the accompanying spacers, so you can have those if you want.

I am happy to answer any questions about the bike.  I would prefer to sell the bike to someone in Southern California, I am willing to drive and meet you halfway to make the deal happen.  I am willing to ship the bike as well, buyer pays shipping costs.

Price = $1500.

Oh man. I've wanted that hunq for a looong time. If you think you'd want to sell just the frame AND ship it to the Midwest we should talk. Thanks in advance.

Thanks to everyone who responded!  It looks like the Hunqapillar has been sold.

Just out of curiosity, what is the saddle height in these photos?  My PBH is 85-86 and I ride a saddle height of 75cm but yours looks higher than that.  Maybe it's an illusion.

Gosh these things go so fast. That's what I get for not looking at the forum everyday!

I look at it many times per day and that Hunqapillar was already spoken for when I first saw it!!

Congrats to Bruce on picking up an awesome bike!

Hey Chris,

I was not the one who purchased it. I did inquire being local guy and all but it had already sold. Probably a good thing because I don't really need it. I already have 3 Salsa Ti bikes that I really like and fulfill all my biking needs. I will say that I've always wondered what a 54cm Hunq would ride like compared to all the other Rivendell's I've owned. It was my favorite color as well.

Happy for the new owner. I hope they enjoy it!

@ Chris Lampe 2:
The saddle height in the photos is 75 cm (measured from bottom bracket to top of saddle).

This bike did sell incredibly fast!  I received a PM from the buyer just 1 hour after writing the original post.

Matt, it was a good price on a fabulous color. It's probably in my best interests that someone beat me to it ;-)

Thanks!  I looked more closely at your photos and your saddle is a lot thinner than mine, hence more seatpost showing.

Love to have a Hunq or a Bomba. Seems like I'm in the grey area size wise. It's hard for me to believe that a 54 Hunq is my size. (5-11 and 86PBH). I usually write it off as being too small, then after it's sold I see that the buyer is approximately my size...... I still don't understand how a 52 Clem works for me. (it does) The flat top bar 80's Stumpjumpers and the Ritchey I ride are 58s.

Well on the positive side, it's been a good thing money wise. While I agonize over the correct sizing, the bike usually gets sold.

I'm 5' 11" and have a 54 Hunq.  It fits perfectly; although there have been times when I've wondered whether it's not a bit big.  On the other hand, I ride a 57cm Bleriot which also fits really well, a 1983 Specialized Expedition in size 60 which is nearly perfect, and I've cast lustful looks at a Hilsen which, per Riv's direction, I'd take in a size 59.  I think it all has to do with the specific frame geometries and, in particular, the length of the top tube.
All the best,
Kevin

The Hunq is "undersized" you guys.

I ride a 56 Atlantis and I'd be on a 48 or a 51 Hunq depending on how much clearance I'd want.

yes a smaller seat post, to provide more standover and to account for tire size, there's going to be about 4-5cm difference in tire height between a hunq and a bleriot or road bike, which is the difference between riding a 54cm hunq and a 57cm bleriot or road.

the ritcheys and stumpjumpers were level top tubes on 26" wheels.

Also 5'10 with 86 pbh and the 54 hunq fits great. As did a 56 Sam and a 56 atlantis.

When I look at bike pictures, wheel size doesn't jump out. My eye is trained on the head tube. I see a short head tube and it's a 54? I immediately move on. That bike's too small for me. But, as you correctly point out, those are 29's on the Hunq not 26" like the 80's bikes the Hunq resembles. Like the Clem, I guess it's a lot bigger than it looks.

After riding all the bikes at the shop one day, the Hilsen was my favorite. I think they come in 57 and 59? Another example of a bike that would be hard for me to decide which of those 2 would be my correct size. I think I'm about the same size as Grant. I always wonder why he doesn't design his bikes so that he would be right in middle of the range of a single frame size? ( make it easy for me) Instead, it seems like I'm always in the middle and have to choose between the larger or the smaller. Maybe the idea is to have the option of using multiple sizes? Set them up different?

The trick there is to buy a 58cm Hilsen with 650b wheels and go on with your new, much better life.

Oh yea, a 58 650B Hilsen, right on, I knew there was a perfect set up. The one I really enjoyed at the shop had moustache bars, as nice as that was, I think I'd go with the Choco-Moose bars for the versitility.
