A century with a flat at mile 99

I took the Roadini out for a century today and at mile 99 on flat pavement I hit a 2” nail that went through my tire, through my tube, through the rim tape, and through both walls of my velocity A23! Fuck! It was so jammed in that I bounced to a halt. 

Soooooo, new rim tape and new tube and I’m good, right? I’m sure there are folks who would say I need a new wheel? Do I?

I had a similar thing happen to a Weinmann concave rim and rode it for years with no issues,

That happened to me, too, but fortunately only about 2 miles from home. But annoying to destroy a rim as well as a tire and tube.

That's crazy ... I had exactly the same with a Weinmann concave rim, somewhere around 1979. But I rebuilt the wheel with another rim.

Would it be prudent to drill that hole through to make it round? That should stop any cracks forming.

99 miles in and you get a nail through your tire & rim...how deflating. Sorry, had to. I'd be concerned about the rim if it were me, but I may keep riding it and just keep a close eye on it for cracks. That bike wouldn't be my choice for a ride that takes me a long way from the house until I felt that I could trust the rim.

I'd probably replace the rim, especially if the braking surface of the side wall is very worn.   

At the very least I'd take Ian's suggestion and round out both of the holes.  If a crack propagates at the inner wall you may not recognize it until you hit a pothole that finishes it off for good.

It sucks but that rim is ruined. You should replace it before it becomes a whole different problem. It's happened to me as well, I had to un-drill a screw from my tire, tube & rim. The idea of drilling out the hole is not prudent. That rim has been compromised and will fail and when rims fail they do so dramatically.

If this is a rear rim I'd probably run it for awhile and see what happens. While keeping a close eye on it of course. 

If its a front the consequences of a sudden failure are much higher IMO and i would go ahead and replace.

I’m gonna file down the burr, make sure the wheel is true, run it for a lil while, and see how things work out.

That would be my approach, and "lil while" to me is "until long after the time I've forgotten there's an extra 2mm hole in my rim".  Replacement in this case would be the more cautious and conservative move, but keeping an eye on it is not horribly reckless in my opinion.

I had the same thing happen a few years ago with the carbon fibre rim on my rear wheel. In my case, what punched through the rim looked like a piece of broken motorcycle spoke that got flipped up by my front wheel and went into the rear, punching about a 4mm hole through the tyre, the rim bed, and finally exited the rim midway between two spoke holes. I was able to ride home with a new tube, and as the damage was midway between spoke holes, I just used a bit of epoxy filler to patch the holes and fitted new rim tape, and I'm still using that wheel with the same rim.
