As we emerge from “Winter” here in the Bay Area I got to take my Saluki out yesterday (as posted in the post yr Riv thread). I thought it would be interesting to see how folks have decided to change their builds over the winter as often happens.

Salukid: my upright but not uptight kid hauler.
Something I LOVE about this frame as a kid hauler is the ability to mount from behind the saddle due to the combination of low bottom bracket and slacker seat tube angle.
Build list:
Widest Bosco Bars (58cm?) + 12cm Nitto Stem + Ergon Grips
Thule Kid seat
Paul Levers + Brakes + Moon Units
Microshift shifter (10 sp indexed) + XT Derailleur on a road link shifting 11-40 cassette
Shimano Crank with 34t + S⁄lver chainguard + VO Sabot pedals
GOLD CHAIN
Trusty Brooks B17 select + Nitto 83 + Paul Blue Balls just for fun
Widefoot liter cage + voile strap + King Kage Iris. “Free to me” SIP water bottle + Radavist bottle
Oldie but goodies Shimano LX Hubs to Synergy Rims + Paul Rasta Skewers + WTB Byways

Bruce Gordon Rear Rack + Rawland Demi-porteur front rack
Carradice Bag with random straps + Safety Pizza + Donut Sacks DONUT KILL ME strap
Rose gold bell because my daughter loves to ring it while we ride!

My winter build was this Paul Taylor frame I picked up from Bicycle Odyssey in Sausalito late last year.

Built up as a singlespeed with Paul Centerpulls, V-O Milan bars, Nitto stem, CK headset, American Classic post, red Brooks B17 (matches the panels EXACTLY), 105/Mavic wheels, Jack Brown Green, was Sugino now V-O cranks with ancient Suntour 42t chainring.

It's tentatively for sale cuz my taxes are horrendous this year, but I finally got 'er out in the sun yesterday and boy howdy do those colors pop! I'm leaning towards just paying the bill and keeping the bike, it's a fantastic ride. Check out the last sun pic in the album.

I'm building up a '08 A. Homer Hilsen. Just need the shifters to make their way from the bowels of my local post office to my front porch and I'll be ready to cable up and dial in.

My favorite part about this build? Barring the chain, cables and mmmaybe the tires, I've cobbled together the frame and 100% of the parts from trades, for-sales and WTBs either here or over on iBOB. It's OUR bike, people!

My winter rebuild is my 2014 Bombadil.

Changed Bullmoose handlebars to Nitto 75 stem (120mm) and 46 cm Compass/Nitto Randonneur handlebars.
Changed Tektro cantilever brakes to Paul cantilevers (Neo-Retro F, Touring R) w/Tektro TRP levers (drilled/gum) and Tektro interrupters.
Changed 40 hole Velocity Atlas rims to 40 hole Velocity Cliffhanger rims.
Changed 650b x 50 Schwalbe Big Bens to 650b x 57 (2.25) Schwalbe G One All Rounder tires.
Changed Berthoud 60mm SS fenders to Honjo H-95 fenders. There is an incredible amount of space left - probably could have gone with 2.35s. I think the rear chain stays will be the limiting factor
Changed Sunrace thumb shifters to ? still haven't decided - I have Shimano Ultegra 8 speed bar-ends that I may try to use as index shifters with the Shimano Altus on the 7 speed IRD freewheel - yes I still use a freewheel. It is on a Phil Wood touring hub (like a Rivvy without the slots) and results in almost zero wheel dish = stronger wheel. Currently have Silver downtube shifters installed.
Changed green Brooks B-17 Ti to Brooks aged B-68. Anybody want to buy a green Brooks B-17 Ti?

Main goal is to make the bike more comfortable. I completed the Cross Florida ride on it a few years ago, but was not real comfortable at the end of the ride - so - wider tires, wider saddle, and handlebars with multiple hand positions.

Going to build up a '95 Road. It's due back in a week from a repair and re-paint. It was a triple and it's going to be a 50/34 compact double instead. 8 speed 11-34 in back or similar (cause I have them in boxes on the shelf) and a shorter reach Technomic stem instead of the Dynamic I had on it. Staying with Nitto 135 bars and Silver DT shifters. Going to squeeze some 38mm Pascenti Pari Motos in place of the Soma New Express (they run around 36mm). So overall, a lighter, quicker, tighter vibe I think.

Switched my Rambouillet from the bar end shifted 3X9 drivetrain that's been on there forEVER to a "modern," brifter-shifted 2X10.  New bars and stem as well.  No pics yet.

The left barend shifter went on my new, non-Riv allroad bike, a 650b'd Fat Chance Chris Cross.  It was a demo sale bike in a one-off color and I couldn't resist.  It came set up as a 1X11 but I wanted 2X and adding a chainring and barend shifter was the cheap and easy way to do it...I've only had it out once but it seems like a great little bike!

Just minor improvements, both involving handlbars:

1. Swapped out the sold-to-me-as-42s VO Course bar -- very nice but felt a bit wide, especially in the hooks -- for an appealingly priced Compass/Herse Maes Parallel, also sold-to-me-as-a-42 but 2 cm narrower at the outside center of the bends; this for the dirt road Matthews. I must say that while the ramps initially felt a wee bit narrow, the hoods felt perfect, and the hooks felt much better than those of the VO. And I probably saved a few grams, doubtless the reason why I'm now so much faster.

2. Today, even! Swapped out the original edition Moustache bar on the Dahon Hon Solo, where it failed to allow a very comfortable position with Joe Bernard's ex-2" bar extender, for a Sury Open bar, which is like a very wide (66 cm) North Road bar, only with no rise/drop and in steel and in black. The Open has considerably less reach than the Moustache, so when I positioned the extender level with Terra Firma, and installed the Open also level with Terra Firma, the reach was considerably less than that of the M bar in the same position and, of course, the Open is higher because no drop.

Only, 66 cm is to damned wide, so I cut of a modest 8 cm from each end. Perfection!

Initially I had tilted the (trimmed) ends of the Open slightly downward; hurt my hands during the inaugural ride. I stopped twice to reduce the tilt, ending up with the open very, very slightly tilted down in front -- ie, ends of the bar very slightly pointed up. Wonderful! Weird, I know, but still, wonderful -- best bar I've used apart from drop bars. Highly recommended.

Oh, 1 more. Swapped out the 60 mm PB Cascadias on the Matthews (60.5 mm Big Ones), where they crowded as close a1-2 mm to the side of the tire, with Kiley's 60 mm SKS's -- these have a shallower arc and are not squared off. Much better!

Hon in full grocery mode with new trimmed Open bar -- 58 cm wide versus original 66; and versus 53 of original M bar.

After building and riding many bikes that have been cheaper Rivendell inspired builds, I was able to buy my first Riv last summer. A 57cm Bleriot. Unfortunately I bought it at a time when biking and bike tinkering were mostly at a halt due to having a second child and buying our first home. So things have finally slowed down a bit and I was able to build it up.

I took it on a test ride around the neighborhood yesterday. Some minor tweaks to be made, but it felt really good.

Very nice build! What is about water bottle cages though? I have that exact combination in the same positions on my Rambouillet!

Nice! I rebuilt my Bleriot this winter too, my second Riv. Love those cranks. Any issues with tire fitment on those rims? I posted on iBoB about an issue I’m having with them.

Darin, who also had the same cages in the same configuration on his Bleriot, until a few days ago...

Darin, I am indeed having some issues with tire seating. I have heard many people say using two rim strips helps. I will probably try that.

The king cages just make sense in that order!

Nice. May I ask why non-aero levers? And: do they brake effectively when applied from the hoods? I'm curious, since I have been -- just thinking, mind you -- of using non-aero levers with the BB7 Road discs on my Matthews (to match the 5-speed Bar Cons pulling 8 speed Dura Ace over 10 cogs).

Patrick,
They work fine for me. I don't find much of a difference between aero and non aero levers especially if the brakes are set up right. I was able to lock up the wheels from the drops on my test ride.

I highly recommend at least trying it on your Matthews.

Thanks, Matthew; will probably try non-aeros one day with the discs the those the current BB7s or some future cable/hyro hybrids. I did just miss a chance, as I recently swapped out the bar, but there will be others.

... Tho' I did just find some hoods (non aero, as a matter of fact) for the very nice Shimano 60 EX brake levers (aero) that I picked up cheap some time ago. (These have longer and flatter bodies than the typical Shimano aero lever, and I am eager to try these, too.)
