Okay, it's officially summer. Near perfect conditions today, lots of sun, not much wind (and what there was came of the lake so nice and cool), fields starting to come up. It's been a wet spring so it's green green green everywhere. Paradise Rd is ... paradise on wheels. Downhill this direction.

Monday's 20 miles on the Acadia carriage roads was biggest ride we've done as a family but everyone finished in good spirits - amazing riding and scenery. Picnic lunch for five in the Happisack with room to spare.

Corn is starting to come up in the town of Trenton ... knee high by the 4th of July, as they say... this is just a few miles from the previous photos I posted, but a different day and a different bike.

Rivendell Road, Joe built, Joe painted, Nitto prototype filet brazed stem chrome plated, Campy Daytona group, some old, shellacked Tressostar bar tape. I've been putting a lot more miles on this bike this year than in past years. It was my "fast group ride" bike, but I haven't done any group rides for many years, so now it's just my fast bike.

I'm curios about your silver Riv'd bike pictured. Is it old or new? It looks like a classic late 80s / early 90s MTB. Also your images remind me how I'd like to get back to Acadia. Having been there as a teen 40-something years ago.

Another thing that brought my memories back - over this last winter I met a bike shop owner from near there in Maine. While out riding a greenway trail in NC,
Bob seemed to shadow me because I was riding a steel road bike - we had a good conversation.  I looked up his shop only by his first name (as he pointed out, the population of my major Southern city was more than all of Maine.)  He is Bob Shields of Southwest Cycle in Southwest Harbor, ME

Mark - my silver bike is an early 2000s aluminum framed Marin MTB. The brushed aluminum frame is what caught my attention when it popped up locally. I rebuilt it from the frame up as kind of an ATB cruiser and use it as my vacation / campground bike. I love the way it rides.

One facet about the northern hemisphere is you never know what you'll get in terms of temperature.  Went for a ride last week, morning temp was 7.8C.  A few days before, 42C with humidity, and now it's about 36C with humidity.  I love all times of year, as long as I can ride weekly.

This was a 65km mixed surface ride from home and back.  20km on quiet roads, 45km on a rail trail.  The Roadini is now my favourite bike of all time.  I'm retiring my road bike, as I have two wheel sets for this bike, one with 43mm for mixed/gravel, and a set with fast 30mm tires.

I went on my first group ride last month... my apologies for being late. I enjoyed riding the Willapa Hills Trail out of Chehalis, Washington. This trail used to be a old passenger and freight steam train from the 1930's that ran from Chehalis to South Bend out on the coast of Washington. There are sections of which are paved, yet most it is hard pack dirt and gravel spanning 56 miles. I rode from Adna to Rainbow Falls State Park and back: 30 miles. The weather was perfect. It was cool in the morning and after the fog burnt off abundant sunshine around 70 degrees. This is my favorite trail.

I plan on riding more it in sections of 30 to 32 mile sections at at time on my Clem in the near future. I am waiting currently for the hot weather to cool down from the 80's to 90 degrees to the mid-70's to low 70's. I don't do hot weather.

We have been having great Summer weather here in Wisconsin, fortunate to miss out on the extreme heat and flooding. The above average rainfall has made the landscape lush and green and full. Yesterday I rode in Richland County, about an hour or so north of where I live. A wonderful mixed terrain ride on isolated backroads and through several unincorporated towns.

I replied to Chris offlist that I was in a very desultory way "working" on a portfolio of photos of bosque-adjacent residential neighborhoods that I often ride through, but as, if that happens, it will happen slowly, here's a favorite from Oct 2023. The ditch has just been dammed off as the absence of water but still-wet soil indicates, and the changing leaves match the bar tape and trim.

Below, another one from 3 months ago from a path that I'd forgotten about and inadvertently found again. There is a spider's web of acequia trails and, like Ralph Wiggums at the Easter Egg hunt, I very quickly forget those I've traveled and re-discover them with glee. This makes life simple.

Lastly, also from late May, El Rio Grande in flood -- nice change from 2023 when it almost dried up completely. This shows just the channel West of the towhead; the Eastern channel is as wide.

I rode the same bike, now with even nicer (for this bike) Oracle Ridges.

The photos bring memories of New Mexico: We were very close to moving to ABQ in 2016 or so, and spent a few windless days riding our Bromptons all about town. The company ended up transferring me elsewhere! 

The Super C trunk sack looks great on the Matthews. Going to look into one of those for a friend perplexed over trunks and panniers. The wider tires totally throw off perception of wheel size. 

Going to check to see if the local library has "Great River". Just finished Matthew Stewart's fascinating "The Emancipation of the Mind: Radical Philosophy, the War Over Slavery, and the Refounding of America". Check your local library.

I Googled reviews of the same and read the ones in the NYT and Goodreads. In the first I immediately saw this:

What was the Civil War about? In a word, slavery.

What actually caused the war, however, is a vastly more difficult idea. Try this explanation on for size: The driving force in American politics in the decades after the American Revolution was the rise of an arrogant, ruthless, parasitic oligarchy in the South, built on a foundation of Christian religion and a vision of permanent, God-ordained economic inequality.

True and false: All is true except "built on a foundation of Christian religion." It was not built on Christianity. Southern slave owners distorted Christianity -- that means, heresy -- to justify their belief that blacks were less than fully human. Truly vicious slavery, as in Uncle Tom's cabin, came only with pseudo-Darwinist ideology; it did not come from St. Paul. The reviewer doesn't know his history. 

While modern philosophers undoubtedly provided doctrinal justification for the flight against slavery, evangelical Christianity and Quakerism and British Methodism were at least as active. Harriet Beecher Stowe was a Calvinist, not a modern German philosopher. And secular abolitionists usually absorbed parts of Christian morality or at least moralism while rejecting the supporting doctrines.

So framing the question in terms of revolutionary thinkers versus counterrevolutionary Christians is at very best a very small part of the truth and that small part very distorted; as so many authors, Stewart sees a bit of the truth and jumps on as the whole solution -- the everlasting error of philosophers.

One interesting thing (if one can use such an anodyne word of something as evil as the Holocaust) about 19th and 20th century white Southern American racism is its paranoid and malicious character, not shared by Spanish, Portuguese, French, or even British racists; even the apartheidist Boers didn't go so far. It was matched in malice perhaps only by the triumphalist Wilhemine German colonizers, certainly themselves social Darwinists. I'm just old enough to have seen the tail end of Jim Crow in Georgia in the 1960s, just before Maynard Jackson and recall this paranoid quality. But none of this has anything to do with Christianity. St. Paul may have accepted de facto first-century Roman slavery and counseled slaves to bear their lot (but slavery was everywhere in the Biblical Levant, even among the Jews) but he was in no doubt about their full humanity.

Well I can't compete with the San Juan Islands!!

First 200km ride of the year today. Usually I have one of those in by the start of summer, and now it feels like summer is almost over. We had some <60 deg f mornings recently, that felt like back-to-school weather. This morning we had thick fog, especially in the low areas. I modified my Holy Kettle RUSA perm route and went by the place where we got supplies back when we kept a horse. Many father-daughter bonding memories here.

Some places the fog was quite thick, making me thankful for good lights, front & rear. The corn is tall and fragrant. 

No more photos after this one. I lowered my nose and finished in 7:30 (riding time). Now enjoying a Sprecher root beer poured over homemade vanilla ice cream.

bunch of 35mm shots from recent bike camping trip to Catalina Island, CA. They give you an orange deer vest for visibility but that thing was driving me nuts so I tied it to my rear bag. however a few too many bumps sent that thing straight into my cassette, hence the roadside repair photo haha.

@Keith P for sure, hit me up if you have any questions! Everything fit into two of the small Ron's bikes Fab's Chest bags. Heaviest single item for me was water, but next time I plan to carry a lot less as there are quite a few refill spots around the island. I was prepared for some more remote days but with a bike you can really get around the island pretty fast and it ends up being pretty cushy with options to eat at the airport or harbors if you want. Main sleeping gear I use is a Durston X-Mid 1 tent, Sea to Summit inflatable sleeping pad, and Firebelly quilt. The sleeping pad and quilt I picked up at the REI used store in Manhattan Beach. I think you can get lucky with some deals there if you're willing to settle for some wear or do some light repairs.

Back on June 29th, I decided to try to see if I could carry my Leica M6TTL with Elmar 50/2.8 collapsible lens in my Swift Kestrel bag. It fits, but at 2lbs, it presses against the brake cables, so I won't carry it again in this bag:

I rode to the Pulgas Water temple in Woodside, California, then stopped again at the Woodside Historic General Store. I finally finished the roll, got the film developed, scanned the negatives and did the PhotoShop work, so here's a few that I took, starting with "I've never been there before 9AM before, so I didn't know the gates were unlocked at 9!":

I haven't yet figured out how to get photos from my iPhone to my Mac (neither iCloud nor iPhoto are cooperating) so I've had to manually send them by email to the Mac and download. Also, I apparently managed to lose a passle of better photos from the Thomas Village neighborhood which I will find or re-take.

I mean to: find a way to download photos, then organize them, then get them onto a web page, but here is a start. 

There're the enclaves off of Valley View Road, then Thomas Village -- just a street since I lost the other photos, then Los Duranes from this afternoon.

The VV neighborhoods are unpscale enclaves tucked in behind Coors Blvd -- my ex and I lived in one before our divorce; Thomas Village is also a modestly upscale one  just East of the RG recreational path (over a little footbridge) and just South of Candelaria, and Los Duranes, the most interesting, is an old pre-development North Valley neighborhood named after the founding family. Working class, Hispanic, with the odd new treeless and sterile McMansion looking for cheaper land.

Forgot to add of course: I'm undertaken a modest and haphazard project to collect photos of bosque area neighborhoods. I find this interesting in itself, but it also provides a reason to do the sort of riding I used to enjoy as a boy, just riding around a city to explore different neighborhoods. I recall doing this in Delhi as a 12 year old on my hot-rodded (crimson repaint, aftermarket AW hub) road brake Hero, particularly the neighborhoods where a couple of girls I fancied lived.

I had through that a Clem or suchlike might be the ideal bike for this, but today I rode the Joe Starck gofast and I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed just toodling around Los Duranes as an extended detour from the RG bike path. The bike is perfect comfortable for this sort of riding as for just about all other pavement riding.

I stopped at Albertson's on the way home and the Sackvill Small carried:

1 "handle" of Gordon's London gin

1 quart of lemon juice

1 pint of dill pickles

1 pint of whole mile

Fat loaf of P Farm whole wheat

Pretty good since the bag already contained a medium sized dopp kit with bike stuff in it and a Lezyne minipump

One more (need to organize my thoughts as well as my photos): I'm using the camera on an iPhone 8 and in our mile-high summer sun it's hard to see the screen; and then there's my so-far hopeless photo inability. I wonder if it's worth buying an inexpensive digital camera that lets you look through a viewfinder ...? Or, if one is incorrigibly incompetent with an iPhone camera, will that mean that buying another camera is simply a waste of money?

I emphasize "cheap." I know my daughter took good photos with this iP 8 (I use her cast-offs) so perhaps the wisest thing is to get better at taking snapshots (and I also emphasize "snap" shots).

Went for a ride along the waterfront and paused for a view of the Golden Gate.

I brought Great Lakes Sam to the West Coast, because my daughter didn't have room in the car to bring West Coast Sam to Carmel, where we're having a week of family fun. Coincidentally, Lael Wilcox was scheduled to ride right by us today. The closure of Route 1 south of here, however, forced her to change her route. She spent last night in Marina, a bit north of here, and headed east from there, then south. So, I thought I'd ride up to Marina this morning and try to catch her and ride with her for a ways. I laid out a 190km route that would have me ride with her for about half of it. The ride up Monterey Bay this morning was quite foggy. This frame from a video doesn't really do it justice. Quite beautiful riding along the dunes.

Somehow Lael got away from her hotel without me seeing her. By the time her dot moved, she was already a good 20+ minutes ahead of me. I spent 100km chasing her, getting within maybe 5 minutes, but she turned south where I needed to head back north to Carmel and I never saw her (or Rue, one of my all time favorite photographers). Dang, she is a fast rider! The ride went down the valley along the 101 and it got very hot. What with the heat and me riding a hot pace and not staying up with my fueling, I was really burnt at the turnaround point. Which really took its toll because the second half of the ride featured a big climb. I had to ride slowly and stop several times to manage the heat. I even walked one steep section (upwards of 8-10%, so not crazy steep, but it was hot and I was tired). As always, the effort is rewarded by views and, in this case, a 60kph descent through some wooded twisties. Much fun. This is the view back to the NE from near the top of the main climb. Great ride for a Sam Hillborne - didn't slow me down during the first half time-trial, and the cushy tires were fabulous on the bumpy roads through the hills.

Labor Day next weekend ... the unofficial end of summer!

It has been fun following this thread.  In the beginning, summer was just starting and that meant longer days with lots of sunlight.  I'm not a fan of the heat, but I do like light!  As it's nearly September, I feel the shift already; when I leave my house for a pre-work ride I'm now using a headlight, and the woods are quite dark just before 6:30am.  I actually enjoy this time of the year, the additional layers that are, sometimes, required.  Looking forward to the next crop of photos.

First 200km ride of the year today. Usually I have one of those in by the start of summer, and now it feels like summer is almost over. We had some <60 deg f mornings recently, that felt like back-to-school weather. This morning we had thick fog, especially in the low areas. I modified my Holy Kettle RUSA perm route and went by the place where we got supplies back when we kept a horse. Many father-daughter bonding memories here.

Some places the fog was quite thick, making me thankful for good lights, front & rear. The corn is tall and fragrant. 

No more photos after this one. I lowered my nose and finished in 7:30 (riding time). Now enjoying a Sprecher root beer poured over homemade vanilla ice cream.

Hey John,

Yeah we took the Palouse-Cascades trail for the most part! We headed north to Spokane around Revere, WA and eventually linked up with the Columbia Plateau Trail. The trail was awesome, but could get gnarly for long stretches with the track ballast. A few times we took the neighboring roads to get a break from swimming upstream, but there are sections where it's unavoidable. The heat had us getting up early to get miles done before the hottest points of the day. It made for some great views of the morning light on the golden rolling hills!

We did not run a GPS track on the route, but my friend did map the route out on ridewithgps and we followed that pretty closely the whole way. On the last day, instead of McCall Rd we took Revere Rd into Lamont. I am not sure how we would have actually got on McCall Rd. It looked doable on paper, but not so much in real life.

Lovely ride yesterday with the Major Taylor’s Trailkeeper organization here in Chicago. Fabulous fall day ride to Major Taylor’s gravesite. 

The inaugural ride with my new Pass & Stow front rack, loaded up with my Restrap Rando Bag. Thanks to the good team at Mack’s Bike and Goods here in Evanston IL for getting me all set up with the bike, fenders, lights, and the rack. 

Unfortunately my Platypus was the only Riv on the ride, although well commented on.
