I'm going to be in Chapel Hill for a 5 day class next week, never been to the area and I'm not positive how much free time I'll have but I plan on bringing a bike.  Any locals care to chime in with a great before or after work (<20 mile) ride idea?

Thanks!
Tony

Hi Tony,

I lived near Chapel Hill while completing my Ph.D. and really enjoyed the rural roads west of Chapel Hill. It might be longer than 20 miles, but a ride toward Saxapahaw, Eli Whitney, or Pittsboro would be nice. You could also check out the American Tobacco Trail (rails-to-trail path) in Durham.

Tony,
I live in Raleigh, NC, and ride the paved trails of the 100+ mile Raleigh greenway system often.  The Neuse River trail follows the river for 20+ miles, and has lots of nice bridges and wildlife.  Last Sunday I was on my big green tractor I saw 5 deer, several Great Blue Herons, and my first Bald Eagle of the season.  Chapel Hill is about 30mi and 30 min away from several points on the Raleigh greenway trail system.  If you have an Apple device, search for the RGreenway app.  Here's the main web site for the trail system, with links to maintenance notices, etc.:

If you're looking for single track, you might try these trails:
  • Harris Lake County Park (Near the Shearon Harris nuclear plant.  This is south of Chapel Hill).  Might think twice about doing these trails w/out a squishy fork...
  • Umstead State Park in Raleigh.  Can do on a rigid bike (used to do it on my Vaya with 44mm tires easily)
  • Lake Crabtree County Park (might oughta have a squishy fork here too, but can be done if you're willing to get off and push at times)
Carboro is a nice little town right beside Chapel Hill.  Cool little bike shop there called Back Alley Bikes (Surly, Kona, Giant mainly).

Oak City Cycling and Frank's Cyclery would be your best bike shops in Raleigh.

Contact me offline if you have any questions - will be glad to help if I can.  I don't get to Chapel Hill much, but I should be able to point you in the right direction at least.

Tom
