I want to compare the ineffable beauty of my new Monocog with that of Leah's Platypus. Mine wins by a mile. I'm really serious.

I traded this for the 2003 26" wheel Curt Riv Road custom, so it's on topic.

Seriousness aside, I just had the original rear tire replaced -- I swear, 5 lb; the casing felt and looked like a car tire! -- so that both f and r are WTB Rangers set up tubeless. The bike lost 2 lb from the tubes and that massively heavy tire, this with the sealant in the new setup.

I also cut the bar from 76 cm to 57 cm, raised the saddle and shoved it back, and flipped the stem "up". Far more comfortable, far easier to pedal -- on the inaugural ride it felt like a 90" gear with a 135 mm crank on flat tires with brakes dragging.

It's now fun to ride, though only if you keep "just ride" in mind; it's not a bike to try to go fast on.

Off for bosque ride.

Nice! That would be a great winter bike here in the snow lands! Did you sharpie out the name on the down tube?

Thanks. No, no sharpie; perhaps a previous owner did? I haven't seen a name.

This just in! Bar was originally 76 cm, I trimmed it 4 or 5 times, now it's 54 cm and almost narrow enough. But because of the bulge to 31.8, the levers can't move inward any further, and I like the grips.

Narrow is Nice!

Just rode it for an hour on dirt except for a mile or so of pavement. Bar too low; need an upriser stem of about same length to get bar higher and a bit closer. Higher and closer, the 54 cm will be pretty just-right, tho' my left palm has always started tingling after 2 to 10 miles, depending on the type of "anything-except-drop" bar. BUt after 11 miles, my palm is just starting to tingle. I'll replace the stem, then if that does not suffice, consider a bar with some fore/aft bend.

WTB Rangers (3") are quite nice! The outer knobs rub delicately on the chainstays when I corner of hit a hard bump, but this is a beater, and I am sure that those stays are not .4mm thick. Let 'em rub! The Rangers roll relatively fast on pavement (sure, the gear is only 64" and the crankarms are, I think, 180s, but still, compared to other knobbies, these do seem to roll fast -- better, even, than the nice Maxxis Ikons that I installed on my erstwhile late-Santa-Cruz-era (1996) Bontrager Race Lite. I am chuffed! And the fatness (sounds like the KJV) just makes the ride plush and smooth, even if slow and somewhat plodding; it's nice plodding.

Gear is 65" b/c tire is 30 1/2" tall.

Riv content: Wish the 18" stays were 19" long.

Patrick Moore, you’ve gone too far! The only thing your homely Monocog has in common with my Racing Platypus is that they’re equally unfortunately named!!!

Just you wait until I show you up in a week or so. There it will be, the First Platypus, resplendent in raspberry metallic paint and silvery parts from the elves of Rivendell, topped off with glimmering anodized bits from Analog. You will eat crow. And here’s a glimpse.

Look at all that teal. Your unfortunately named Platypus is going to be the cat's knees and the bee's meow!

Homely! How dare you! How dare you!

Anyway, my tires are fatter than your tires.

A man publicly defending his Monocog after some woman insulted it. A woman, extolling the virtues of her Platypus after some man said it wasn’t as good as a Monocog. It has come to this.

It all sounds so...inappropriate.
🤣

This is either really funny OR I’m getting in trouble by the admin...
Ok, I’ll stop, I’ll stop...

To paraphrase the great Bob Dylan - Riv content: Grant loves Dylan - something is happening here but I don't know what it is 🤷🤪

It amuses me greatly that you think I don't know my Buffalo Springfield from my Dylan. How dare you!

That looks great! The trimming of the bars sounds perplexing though?  The original width sounded perfect. But, I guess if you are going from drop bars or even some other Riv. bar 76cm would feel wide; it's a short adjustment period really.
Something like this would be awesome!! : http://www.monebikes.com/store/meal-replacement-bar

Change to a BMX stem & get some MoTo Bars!  😎👍💕

Or not

Have fun

Sorry, one more; my original "good" bike. A late 70's Schwinn Heavy Duty that I bought new in 81'
Bought the complete bike and changed literally every part on it, but the frame! LOL
(I tend to do that)
I put 10,000 miles on this (conservatively) over the next 2-3 years.
I still have it, but it's been "retired" it had a B-72 saddle back in the day.

Thanks. Some interesting bikes.

I've hated wide bars since I got my first mountain bike in 1989 and swapped out the nice Nittos for what was known back then as a French "tourist" bar. I've tried wide bars, straight, curved, and drop, and always go back to narrow. 54 cm is comfortable, tho' I'd not want anything narrower for reasons of handling and control. The "wide" drop bar on my dirt road bike is 44 cm at the center of the hooks, 42 cm on the ramps, and that's 4 cm wider than my road drop bars. I ride a 60 c-c frame, old style, so I'm not petit.
