That's funny. I haven't read O'Grady for years. Note though that O'Grady was producing similar snide cartoons way back in the steel era.

We have several of those guys on the left in our local club.  One of my touring buds refers to them as "large diameter people on skinny tires".

When I see bulky, sweaty folk in tight lycra, I think more of "large diameters in skinny tubes". But hell, they are riding, leavem alone.

As a Riv-riding well-stuffed kielbassa, I have to agree with Mr. Moore; please leave them (US!) alone?

Have been insulted enough times to somewhat get used to it.  In general don't wear lycra while riding, but even the stuff I have is not baggy enough by my standards.

Anyway, a skinny tire is 38mm for my use.  Have been again contemplating getting rid of both my Rivendell bikes to concentrate on actual wide tire bikes.  50mm or wider.  Maybe even 3.7 inches or something.

Great cartoon. I get so, so tired of roadies with a 25-30 lb spare tires stuffed into lycra making comments about how much my Roadeo weighs.

Awesome cartoon but please oh please oh please let's not let this develop into an anti- carbon discussion. Lets just let everyone ride whatever kind of bike it is they want to ride and be happy that they are out there riding. We should be celebrating our sameness (bikes) and not fighting over our differences (steel vs cf, tire width, position, etc.).

Cheers!

But if you apply that policy, how do you know -- and prove the fact to others -- that you are smarter, righter, better, and part of a superior group of people?

While I know that this is tongue-in-cheek, I humbly offer that  I am not smarter, righter, and better and that we are not a superior group of people—but rather that I am part of a group of people who are bound by love for things Riv, and especially by love for Rivendell bicycles.  We are bound by love and that is our sameness.

okay, now I'll step down from my tiny tippy soapbox ;0)

Being familiar with Grant P.'s feelings carbon bicycles, and this group's strong preference for steel and in particular, lugged steel bikes; it seems a bit unrealistic to request that this group not engage in anti-carbon discussion. I would imagine it's akin to going to a group with a fondness for traditional film camera and ask that they not dis digital photography. Just sayin'...

I don't think it's unreasonable at all to ask members *not* to bad mouth CF without evidence of its defects. This is simply asking listers to be reasonable. Mere expression of bias against this, that, or the other because one doesn't happen to like it is clearly irrational and it is a great way to degrade the content and tone of a list!

To say that today's CF bicycles are dangerous because they can fail suddenly with traumatic results for the rider is a reasonable thing to do, as long as one's data is up to date. Saying that billboard graphics are ugly compared to understated graphics is fine as long as one grants sufficient leeway to others' tastes. Saying that tight lycra looks funny on fat people is fine as long as one is not cruel. But simply to sneer at people who do things differently ... well I don't have to complete the sentence.

I would say keep criticisms limited to the bikes and products, not to their riders. We all know that CF guy and he isn't a bad dude, is he?

I just came from a shop that heads all the hill country sports events.  They were assembling a new carbon bike for a guy standing there and waiting.  All great folks, and my favorite shop.  They were servicing the BB on the Team Fuji lugged steel frame I bought for my daughter to build on summer break - they went crazy over it.  If carbon is for them, more power to them - it ain't for me.

However, it's not the technological revolution these billboards want us to believe.  It's probably the right edge for a serious racer, but there are people buying them who don't know better and would be better off on our kind of bikes.

Some of my best riding buds ride CF.  Some of them chuckle at my lugged steel bike.  The coffee shop doesn't care what we ride, and we talk about travels, current events, books & movies.  No one cares seriously what material the other's bike is made from.  It's just a bike.

Yep. I don't bash anyone's bike materiel nor their clothing. I had a
carbon bike and I loved it and I rode with lycra and well I felt like
a dweeb also felt obligated to go fast. That got old quick. I got tired
of returning a super duper light $150 saddle cause the plastic shell
broke two times, that carbon bike developed hairline cracks at the
bottom bracket Cervelo replaced it. I sold it to finance my AHH. Best
maneuver I've ever made. I just ran an errand on my Hilsen tonight
basket up front baggins type handlebar bag, rear lights and a Cygolite
just two miles RT total enjoyment, wouldn't have done that on my
carbon. To each their own whatever makes you happy.

I think it's okay to discuss the merits of different paradigms as long
as we don't go all Mensa about it.

Oh yeah and I have some lonely lycra kits hanging in my closet if
anyone on this list secretly wears the stuff you're welcome to em :-)

Best,

Hugh

Ha! That picture is great. The saddle on that bike looks insanely uncomfortable. Now I think I understand what people mean when they say "ass hatchet".

I installed a wireless computer on a high end (Dura Ace Electric 11) Specialized cf bike that had platform pedals and a seatpost rack with trunk bag attached to the cf seatpost. The owner said he loved it. To do him justice, the bike was given him by a friend who had to give up cycling.

Incidentally, it was fun to play with the servos while the bike was on the stand: whirr, clack, whirr, clack.

Patrick M. and Peter M. make good points. One of the things I like about this list is that it's generally civil respectful. Sure, snarky remarks can be made. I know I've contributed my share, but overall there seems to be a healthy element of respect and not taking ourselves too seriously.

I don't know that MUSA shorts look any less ridiculous than bibs. I have both, ride in both and like both. 95% of my rides this year have been done in eitehr MUSA bottoms or Chrome bottoms. While I'm not a big fan of the way the MUSA shorts look--too short, too billowy--they're great on hot days. I prefer the MUSA shorts when I'm off the bike checking out a waterfall, view or grabbing a bite to eat.

Yesterday as I was heading back from the Columbia River Gorge, I was yo-yoing back and forth with some guys on race bikes, one plastic, one steel. Our paces eventually coalesced and we talked a bit. Our set-ups were completely different as was our attire and yet we were all out enjoying the Gorge by bike. What's not to like?
