Hi all,

I picked up a Ron's Fabio's Chest in the large size a while back for another bike, but I'm considering using it on my Homer (mounted to the handlebars). That said, between the long head tube and tall stack stem, I'm not sure there are any racks that would work as a bag support. For those of you who are using this bag, can you share photos of your setup? Thanks!

What’s your brake setup?
If you’re using cantis, there’s a nice trick to keep the bag from affecting your brake cable action and still secure it to your head tube.

Mine actually kinda rests on my front rack tombstone, but not the rack platform itself

I ride a 62cm bike and no rack works that looks right. I built 2 Ron's pec decks but I'd just skip the hassle and buy the Rod Steward bag support. The pec deck are solid as a rock.

I think the Rod Steward is the best solution if you're not taking it on and off a lot. This is how I have mine set up.

I would have thought on a Homer that you would get away with it just resting on your headtube though.

Here’s a very non optimized setup using the fabs abs from ronsbikes modified with xl nitto rack struts from Rivendell.
The xl struts give a lot of wiggle room to eventually get the fit you want.
(Not a riv, but you get the idea)

I have both a Rod Steward and a homebrew Pec Deck. I slightly prefer the Pec Deck — it plays a little nicer with my Tubus Tara low-rider front rack. Having said that, I think I’m going to replace the whole shebang with a Pass and Stow 3-rail rack and Bags by Bird Right Height custom handlebar bag.

Bag is empty here but it still makes the point. There's 11.5 inches from the base of the only front rack I have left, (Nitto 32f Campee? I think) to the bottom of the handlebars.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! Looks like a DIY pec dec or Rod Steward’s the best (and probably only) solution.

For the love of Zeus, Nicholas, what a picture!

I've had no trouble running a Fab's Chest rackless on my 57cm Hillborne with Paul mini-moto v-brakes installed.

Same chest on my Appaloosa with a Nitto M1 rack. Running Paul cantilevers on this rig, rack helps keep the bag from interfering with the hanger.

My lightest most fuss free solution is to run a bootlace (a strap would work too) from the stem to lamp holder or something else suitably sturdy. It means I can take the bag on and off easily and there is plenty of room for brakes and cables etc.

I really like this solution, Brendon! Thanks for sharing.

Can't find a picture but this reminded me that in the past Ronnie suggested putting a piece of brake cable housing over the hanging part of the brake cable when running cantis. It works as a sleeve and prevents the bag from impeding the movement of the cable.

I have done this and it does work with the caveat that a heavy bag or swinging load can fray your brake cable. I have had a cable almost snap at the point the cable leaves the cable hanger.

This is the proper Ron’s Bikes way to do it:

I cut a piece of cable housing and installed it on the brake cable between the hanger and straddle cable yoke. I cut it short enough so that freely slides up and down vertically, and doesn’t bind or interfere with the brake action (this is important).

The bag hangs so that it rests directly on the protective housing piece, but I also secure the bag using paracord, a cord lock, and with two pieces of foam “mounting spacers” between the headtube and the housing. This keeps the weight of the bag from pushing against the brake cable, but still allows the cable to freely glide within the extra housing piece installed to protect the cable.

Excellent demo, description and pic, Brian! This is the info I needed for my reference above :0)

Thanks Eric!

For anyone interested, you can buy those foam mounting spacers directly from Andrew the Maker (everyone else gets theirs from him anyways):

This is good to know. Thanks. Since I have a newer Homer, I'm running Paul Racer centerpulls so I would need to use Ron's trick that Brian shared above. I'm currently using drop bars and will likely be going back to alt bars soon so a set with some rise on it would probably help keep the stem low enough such that the M1 rack works. I have Nitto Kite bars that I'm hoping to use, but that has almost no rise to it.

Hows your Sam ride with that bag all loaded up? Thinking of a front load setup for my Sam too but worried about wonky handling.

I’ve had wonderful luck with Jack the rack and it switches between multiple bikes🙂
