Great togs and shoes

Some very elegant stuff. I'd like to know more about those pantalons de Paris and the "Trousers/Plusses". The full plus fours are a bit over the top for today's aesthetic, I fear. And of course the shoes look nicer than most sold today. But I'd probably buy a few pairs of the pantalons and the trouser/plusses if there were available.

And I'd love to own a few of those silk or even cotton jerseys for hot weather.

Suggestion to Rivendell: Re-make good wool cycling knickers and silk or quality cotton knit summer jerseys.

Still and all, if I have to choose all one period, I'd choose the present one.

Aside: Serendipitously discovered a pant ("pants"?) that works well for summer riding when you don't want to turn up in shorts: REI has a very tightly woven, very light cotton hiking pant (let's settle this right now: I wear a 2-legged garment, short or long legs. Is this a "pant" or a "pants"?) with snaps that lets you fold up the legs neatly and secure it at 2 or 3 different heights, so you can ride in the hot, sticky air, but when you arrive, simply unsnap and unroll and look moderately normal.

"Nother aside: I just had a very nice fall afternoon ride on the '99 gofast fixie, wearing my (self-) improved Endura riding pants. These are cut slim, with slash pockets on the side so that they don't bulge, plus 2 rear zipped pockets, and made from a medium weight somewhat stretchy synthetic. I had them pegged, and had ankle zippers added (I also had that crucial rear-center belt loop added). They're quite slim; think early Beatles without the Cuban heels; but decent enough for non-cycling environments.

They're very nice, but the sole defect is that (they're several years old now) they are cut on the "hipster jeans" ("jean"?) patterns and are too low both in front and back, tho' they do rise a bit in the back. I find them bearable in back only if I hike the hem of my boxers high above the waistband -- I hate even the hint of a gap between jersey hem and pant/s waistband.

If anyone knows of something similar -- basically, a cross between tights and pants -- slim cut pants, with pockets and zip fly and belt loops, pegged and zipped at bottom; cycling-appropriate fabric -- I'd be delighted to hear about it.

Interesting look into what concerned riders of yesteryear. Looks like nothing much has changed! Biking stuff was expensive back then, too!! Guess that indicates prices will never lower now.

Dear Patrick,
I think it is pants from a pair of pants which is a shortened form of “pantaloons.” Pantaloon was a singular leg cover hence a pair of pantaloons or “pants.” I think the term eye glasses must have evolved similarly.
All the best,

Hi Erl,
That’s interesting.
Do you know that “pantalon” is the Filipino word for pants :-)

El pantalon is Spanish, though it might well be a borrowed, everyday word in the Philippines. Salawal is the Tagalog (I had to look it up; tho' half Filipino, mi madre/aking ina (looked that up too) never taught us Tagalog or Bikol, which was her native language, spoken in Sorsogon province, where she came from.

Erl: was there such a thing as a pantaloon singular? What would anyone do with a single leg covering, unless your were Long John Silver or a Dufflepud? Inquiring minds want to know.

Patrick,
I think they started as singular leg coverings tied together at the waist, similar to chaps. I found this article fascinating and connects, though loosely, to riding (steel) horses and Grants Blahg post. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/first-pants-worn-horse-riders-3000-years-ago.

Aha; that may well be the answer.

I read this:

Previously, Europeans and Asians wore gowns, robes, tunics, togas or — as observed on the 5,300-year-old body of Ötzi the Iceman — a three-piece combination of loincloth and individual leggings.

... and immediately thought of the Eastern US woodland Indians (and the Scots Irish who copied them) who (so I read) wore something very similar: 2 individual, separate leg coverings and a loincloth. So 1 pantalon + 1 pantalon = 1 pr pants. Makes sense.

Marketing never changes.....😆

Thanks for this post. Cool catalog.

Actually, Hiduminium and Duralumin go to prewar aircraft alloy trade names.
People sure want Hardy flyreels made from these alloys.

The GB Hiduminium stem is a damned good-looking stem.

Wow!

It’s so pretty, I’d run it, even if it was a horrible fit...and care less about its weight.🤩 Thanks for the pictures and education.

I guy I worked for in the nineties at Qranc, came up with the word IRIDIUM (I think that’s the word?) for Oakley. He said it was pure marketing BS, not a technology. The lenses were just lexan plastic. I think I remember he said the lens cost around 25 cents to make.

I wonder what alloys are in Hiduminum. 🤔

Thanks again Ron.

you're welcome, Clayton. .
When a buddy gave me GB Map of England bars, had to use a Nitto UL-2 clamp stem to attach them.  The GB Hiduminium and Raleigh Maes bar cockpit with Weinmann levers came off as a unit.

But I made up for it with beautiful GB Arret levers

thanks - the bike is really quite fast - it's definitely my most aggressive riding position.  We have kind of a Sunday morning 7-mi sprint from uptown to downtown, and a friend pacing along with me asked if I had a motor in it.
