Double Riv at Atlanta Kroger

Ever since adding a front rack and basket, riding my Appaloosa to the grocery store has become something to look forward to. To me, there's something classy about rolling down the greenway with an overstuffed bag of produce strapped down up front. 

I've spotted this Riv a few times around town and finally got to snap a photo.

Let's start a thread about grocery Rivendells. The only ones I have
are from ever so long ago, but here's one; I kept it because I thought
it was priddy.

If others bite, I'll take and post a newer one -- well, come to think
of it, the present grocery bike is not a Rivendell, but it *is* the
near clone and, certainly, spiritual offspring of a Rivendell, so it
should count. And it looks nice like a Rivendell.

Here's the old photo. Correction: 2 of them. Tom will remember the
bike. IIRC, perhaps on or near a long-ago Mothers' Day.

Patrick, very nice.  I am assuming these are 26” wheels, I know you used to and still might favor them.  On a large frame it makes it look like today’s long chain stays.

Thanks. Even though I did sell (or trade, rather) the bike, it was a
pretty one indeed. Frame is 58 cm c-c.

Yes 26" or 559 bead seat diameter wheels, with 26 X 1.35" Kojaks. The
stays were about 45 cm long, certainly long for a road bike, which
this was. Very nice handling.

Long ago, someone saw an earlier 26" wheel Riv road custom, and
comparing wheel diameter with seat and especially head tube length,
said, "Wow, that's a big frame."

I traded it to Tom Palmer for the Monocog and I think Tom sold it on.
Who has it now? I'll be curious about his or her reaction to it.

Patrick, I know where 3 of mine are, a Road and my Custom.  My AR went to an iBob in upstate NY.  The rest, well it was a long time ago, I did sell the twine to my Bleriot on eBay in about 30 minutes, the rest are someplace.  I think if I had ordered the Saluki in 54, no 56 it would still be with me, the 55 Bleriot was a replacement because it was smaller.

My grocery Protovelo, which has leapfrogged about ten other bikes in the quiver to become a several-times-a-week mainstay of the fleet.  It's shown here outside the comfy new City Market in Carbondale, CO, on a sunny and cool Saturday morning in late August.  Happy to report that we received a dusting of snow at elevation a couple nights ago up in Snowmass Village, which we hope spells an imminent end to a hot and smoky (and mudslide-y) summer in western Colorado.

I love riding for groceries. It turns what otherwise would be a very tiresome chore (I hate shopping, and I hate city driving) into a pleasant excursion. I very often ride 10-15 miles out of my way to go shopping, just for the chance to take a ride.

The bar is actually a Watson Cycles titanium Parkarino, which has a nice ergo bend that suits my aging wrists and shoulders.  I was just eyeballing it this morning and making plans to replace the black Thomson stem and Paul brake levers with silver versions to be a little more appropriately retro looking.

The grocery ride here is certainly one of my favorites, too, with about 5-6 miles lightly downhill along the highway to the store, and then another 5-6 miles back slightly uphill with a load along the lovely Rio Grande bike path.  And best of all, this Riv and my Bombadil have Son28 dynamo hubs and Edelux2 lights for the quickly approaching shorter days and grocery runs in the dark.  I am hoping against all hope that the e-bikes with their wide open throttles and riders playing with their phones will have all crashed and burned by Labor Day!

When you said, "Rio Grande bike path" I immediately thought: "That's the path just 1 mile from my house, just east across the RG river from my house, that I ride all the time." But you are in Colorado. Aspen? Of course, our RG bike path is perfectly flat ...

A different Rio Grande entirely, with this one being of the rails-to-trails variety.  It runs from Aspen down through the Roaring Fork valley all the way to Glenwood Springs and the Colorado river.  I am lucky enough to live about 1.5 miles away from the path, and my workshop trailer (read: man cave) filled with bikes and other essential items is in a storage yard a short frisbee throw (into the wind, even) from the bike path.

An expensive place to live, but totally worth it!
