I put an offer in on this. It's pretty beat all around so $800 seems high to me but maybe he will consider my offer.

Congrats on that!  He was way over what I thought the frame was worth but to someone that can put in a little time it should be a good one!

I have one of these 53s. You and GF will not be disappointed. It's a really nice frame, and built right, is a very serious ride.

You might consider sending down to:

https://www.groodybros.com/why-groody

or similar, to have some cosmetic work done before working out the build.

It will take P65 fenders. You can put the fattest, cushiest tires imagineable on it (and it will still be a high performance bike, not a cruiser).

IMO, that was a steal.  It was far too small for me and I already have an Atlantis, but I would be still be tempted if it were my size.

Welcome to the Atlantis club! I bet you'll find that it's the absolute best bike for 90% of your rides.

Thanks y'all for the nice words. I know Norah will love it. Esp. since I just ordered some new rat trap pass!!. I don't think it's too horrible cosmetically, but in the future I'll probably have it repainted. No biggie. I got it for $700, not cheap but not like buying a new atlantis!!

I think 700 was fair. Yeah it could use a coat of paint, but 53s don't seem to come up very often, especially as frame/fork only. She's gonna love it.

Nice snag! If it doesn't work out, I'd be interested!

Holy crap that cleaned up well. Based on that my new opinion is that you stole it.

I'm in the "for $700 that's a steal" camp and you did a great build.

Adam, that's really sweet. I'd say you did well getting the frame for $700 considering a new one is $2,300 or $2,350. Plus the wait for a new Atlantis can be lengthy. A friend just canceled his order after a six month wait with no delivery date in sight.

How are do you and Norah like the RT Pass tires? What rims are are they on? Asking because I've contemplated putting them on my '53 Atlantis.

Thanks very much,
Richard

You should be jealous. That's one of the best bicycles ever made. And it only gets better... the more you ride. :-)

Hi Rich,
I have RTP on my Hunqapillar. Front is mounted on Atlas, Rear is mounted on Aeroheat. They measure ~50 - 52mm at 20 - 30 psi (f/r) for my 160# + bike+gear. It's mainly used as a Boston-area commuter on streets and dirt paths.

They are noticeably faster than Big Bens, which I liked a lot. Finding the right pressure was a problem initially. When pressure is low, the tires can be squirmy. I also had a few pinch flats in trying to get the right pressure.

I've since used latex tubes. I like them for the speed and quality of ride. I think they are less prone to pinch flats, but that's anecdotal.

I would recommend giving them a try, particularly if you ride mainly road or hard dirt.

Hi Shoji:

Thank you for your insight on the RTPs. Your riding is identical to mine. After I sent my e-mail I realized the RTPs could raise my saddle to an uncomfortable height. As much as I'd like to try these tires the saddle height and reduced standover gives me pause.

Widest tire I've run to date is the Compass 1.75 on Synergy rims. A short lived 650b experiment was a no go for the reasons mentioned above.

Thanks again for your time and feedback!

Best regards,
Richard
