My Brothers new LHT with Surly racks & 26" wheels. I talked him into this one as he didn't want to spend $4K+ on an Atlantis. I think it's a great looking bike and came with a great group. Our up coming tour will flesh out how he likes it. He'll be running Ortlieb Back rollers and Arkel T-28's in front. We decided on not cutting the steerer tube until later.I think the smog white color is awesome looking.

Nice bike, until you get to that bar! Ouch!

Having seen the smog white in person, it's quite nice.  Good looking bike.  Like the bars way up like that.  Glad Surly went with a longer steerer tube.  Really think the LHT with 26" wheels in larger sizes fills a spot in the bike community that's often overlooked.

I'm sure he'll love that bike. Looks great although I do think he could come down a bit on the bars as they look a bit high. But if that's where he like them, then he should leave him. Somewhere on the Surly site it mentions that their steerer tubes are sturdy and  you don't have to worry about having them uncut and stacked.

Like Eric, I'm a big fan of the 26" wheeled LHTs in larger sizes. I sorta wish when I had purchased mine that I had gone with a 26" wheeled model.

Looking forward to pictures from your tour Hugh.

Looks good.  I agree he should leave the steerer alone until he's 100% comfortable with it.  Don't hurry with the hacksaw.

Touring bike? check
Stout racks?  check
Chubby tires:  check

OK, load it up & go!  Have a good trip & post pics.

Mike,

He was lamenting whether to go with 700c or 26" I told him with the
26" you'll have a vast choice of tires with different tread, and a
cushy ride. I do think he needs to lower the HB's and just have the
spacers above. I also recalled what you said about wishing you'd had
the 26 er which I passed on to him. Also I believe the smaller wheel
is easier to get spinning which I would deem appropriate with a load.

And yeah I'm planning on snapping some pic's bought a 8 gig SD card.

Doug,

Thanks for the kind words. I of course agree with holding off on
cutting too soon. His mechanic was in a hurry to cut it and he
resisted.

Don't fear the stacked steerer tube.

This was my LHT set-up for its maiden voyage. Fenders and many miles have since been added.

The nice thing about the 26ers is that you can fit a 2.15 tire, that includes many mountain bike tires but also Schwabe Big Apples and Big Bens. The largest tire I've fit on my LHT is the 700x47 Marathons (actual 42) seen in the picture above although I've read reports of people putting 700x50 Schwalbe tires.

Funny he's putting a VO stem on today. and he's already running the
Big Apples. 700 x 50 is impressive I imagine without fenders?

Before I got my Atlantis, I was talking to Riv about a custom for touring.  One of my specs was 26" wheels.  To me, versatility is key, and for my purposes 26" was preferable.  Long story made short, I've never regretted my stock 58 cm Atlantis with 700 wheels.  But if I was a bike designer, I'd just use 26" for everything.  Probably a good thing I'm not in charge.  BTW, I hadn't noticed the wheel size in the photo.  Put a chubby tire on & 26 looks just fine.

Nicely done good to start small and build up. I wanted a Riv and started with a Handsome devil, very close in spec to the LHT, love the Devil and still want a Riv. Enjoy riding with your bro that's the important piece.

That is a nice looking LHT. I have a black one with 26" wheels which I enjoy riding. You gave your brother some good advice. Best wishes on the tour.

I think the angle of the photo may exaggerate the bars a bit.  Having the top above the seat and the drops below the seat is a good compromise, but I anticipate dialing it in will remove a stack or two and change the angle.  Very nice bike.

Smog white?/  sounds like a true LA color.

Looks like it will handle some heavy loads.  Have a good time on your tour Hugh.

Surly comes up with the best color names: Blactacular, Space, Dark Black, Not So Dark Black, Blark Due, Meff Teefs, Moonlit Swamp, Hill Street Blues, etc...

When I bought my San Marcos, I pulled the drivetrain off of my Double Cross and put it on this LHT.  I wanted to put a Sugino XD2 wide/low double on it, but Rivendell  didn't have any in stock, so I ordered an XD2 triple and a XT derailleur.  I am going to remove the fenders so I can put bigger tires on it for the gravel roads.  I hope the Dureme 40s will fit on my old Santana Noventa.

Tony, nice looking LHT. I wish I had picked up 40mm Duremes when they were available.

I'll be heading out on mine tomorrow for a sub 36hr overnight somewhere in the Mt Hood National Forest.
