Every so often I get restless and "reconfigure" what my AR set up is.  I haven't settled on the one true build that is best because it does so many things so well.  But this build is feeling pretty darn good.  Thought I'd share...

I've got to jump in and applaud the new build.  Of course, the AR seems to look great no matter the wide variety of build combinations.  But since your current configuration is similar to my evolved favorite, I'll jump in and say, "Well done, sir!"...

...and thank you for sharing.

Addison,
That is a gorgeous bike.  I like the build you have. Well done.  A front basket is on my list to add to one of my bikes.
Thanks for sharing,
Erl

Great build!

If I may make one suggestion: throw some shellac on those VO cork grips. I rode those grips w/o shellac for about 8 months and they started cracking a quickly fell apart. Shellac may help that... and they'll probably look even better!

This is awesome!!! It's builds just like this that convinced me to get a Riv in the first place. I love how the 26" all rounder's look. Just so perfect. Great job!

I really  like the build...now I'm not jonesing for racks and a basket yet for new custom but given that you are a teacher who commutes regularly and you have to schlep things back and forth, the build makes total sense...Addison, your bikes are always very tastefully appointed

The AR was long gone when I discovered RBW but it's a bike that interests me.  For those who've been following Riv for a long time, how does the AR differ from an Atlantis?   Is the Atlantis a slightly tweaked production version of the AR or are there substantial differences?

I've always loved your "this is what the XO-1 evolved to" AR. Those Paul brakes are sweet, and Suntour thumbies shift like buttah. The carbon spacer is awesome!

Oh, my.  Beautiful.  I vote no fenders.

I'll try my best. I do not have an Atlantis, but my fellow Winnipegger Mark R. does have one. My 1997 A/R was Waterford-built w Reynolds 753/531 (forks), and was meant to be a do all. It is a more refined version of the X0-1 which I also have. Both are 26" wheel sizes. I favour the moustache bar cockpit  .. . Addison's A/R looks like it might be a later version...I'd like to say 1998 or 99 which was a little more customized. I feel that the Atlantis is a more robust version of the A/R. in that it can do a lot of things well and it's a very rugged and  good-looking bike. I'm glad I got to see it in the flesh, finally.

I'm not sure of all the nuances, but I believe the all rounder never came with 700c wheels, which the 58cm and larger Atlantis frames do. Beyond that, I think they are really quite similar. I wonder if the tire clearance is the same? Atlantis can fit 2.35 slicks.

Addison:

That is a beautiful build.  Nothing like a full tear down to allow you to clean all those hard to reach places.

One question:  you mention 26 lbs weight (carbon assisted, chuckle).  Seems kinda light, if that includes the rack & basket.  I recall weighing my 58 cm Atlantis one time while re-assembling after a trip, and getting something like 26-27 lbs before I put on any racks.  It would have had 35-40 mm road touring tires.  An old Rivendell flyer or reader mentioned the Atlantis F&F was roughly a pound more than their other bikes of comparable size.

On the fender question, it looks great as-is.  Given that you have fendered bikes, I'd keep it as-is.  Just pulled the fenders off my Atlantis after El Nino decided to pass us by.  Maybe next winter.

Thanks all for the compliments.  I'm really just guestimating on the weight.  I think others have hit on the AR and Atlantis differences adequately.  The AR is a bit lighter and "lively" I suppose?  I've certainly toured on my AR even if it is not purely a touring geometry bike.  Others may have already seen this but some time ago I some photos of various builds over the years that perhaps are of interest:

Some of those photos do look familiar, esp the Nevada trip.  You've loaded your A/R down as much as I have my Atlantis, judging by the Oregon trip photo.  Another tribute to the versatility of Grant's designs.  So yeah, I'll bet the A/R is about a pound lighter than the Atlantis.  For that you get a livelier ride un-loaded & decent handling with a load.  No way am I taking pix of my speedo at 50 MPH!

After much fiddling about with weight on my Atlantis, I'm convinced it's more about placement & balance than "how much".  People do serious tours with Hilsens & Hillborns with pleasant reports.  OTH, I can load my Atlantis to handle like a noodle.  Rivendells overlap nicely to span a spectrum of uses, depending on how they're set-up.  Your variety of configurations is evidence of how far you can go with one bike.

After awhile Riv made AR's with 700c wheels in  the larger sizes. I have a 64 x 60 cm from 2000. These were not custom built. Here is the relevant page from the RR
