Anyone mount Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Velocity Atlas rims? The tires are tubeless ready but I don't think the rims are. I've asked tubeless questions in the past and the general response I get is - if you use the right tape and enough sealant, anything can be tubeless ;).

Thinking of buying the Rivendell 26" dyno wheelset (vs. going a build with something like the velocity cliffhanger rims)

great question, the velocity atlas rims are not tubeless ready s0 - yes with the right tape and sealant, they would be, potentially?

I too have the Atlas rims and have thought about it, but have not tried.

Not my experience, alas. I've had experts set up tubeless ready tires on tubeless unready rims with lotsa tape, and while it worked after a fashion, it was chancy whether the beads would stay tight against the rim when air pressure was released; IOW, the setup required air pressure to secure the beads firmly. Real tubeless setups (eg, F Freds and Velocity Blunt SS's) don't require air pressure to keep the beads in place.

Why not rely on air pressure, you ask? Well me, I fear finding, 20 miles from home, after a tire deflates, that I have no way of getting bead and rim back together again.

Still, if the truth of the assertion cannot be held to be universally true, your setup might work, and I'd be interested to hear if it does.

Alas, it is not so. See here:
The "Tire Interface" is stated as "Clincher".

On tubeless-ready Velocity stuff the "Tire Interface" mentions "Tubeless". Like the A23 here: http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/a23-622

I think Philip Kim has a Hunqapillar with RTP tubeless on Atlas. (Set up by Gravel & Grind?)

Maybe he'll chime in?

I just bought a Hunq off craigslist that has RTPs tubeless on Atlas rims. I didn't need another bike but a Hunq in my size, beautifully built, at an amazing price. . . well, that's not just another bike. I scooped it up.

The seller said it took a couple of tries to get one of them to hold air but then it worked fine. I think the issue was how much or what kind of tape was used. But they seem to be well-seated and holding air, if that is the question. I can take measurements later if you are curious about clearances, etc. Looks roomy.

It has been a hard week and I haven't ridden it yet. I'm also just getting up to speed on how to maintain a bike that is tubeless. Can I use my floor pump to top off the air when needed or do I always need to use a compressor cartridge?  I wanted to get some tubes to have on board just in case it flats out on a ride. And so I've also read some tutorials about installing tubes after tubeless, just in case. Any tips most welcome though perhaps better in a separate thread.

[Typo: I meant compressor or CO2 cartridge.]

Valerie - congrats on the Hunqapillar purchase! With tubeless you should be fine with any regular air pump for topping off. You want a compressor or something for when it goes flat, because you need a heavy blast of air to get it seated right. I have 2 tubeless setups (one legit with tubeless ready rims and tires, another with tubeless ready rims and non-tubeless ready tires, and about to setup a 3rd with non-tubeless ready rims and tubeless ready tires), I have a Topeak Joe Blow high volume floor pump and have been fine with just that, never had to use a compressor - the downside is those HV pumps only go to 30 psi. I also keep some air compressors in my riding tool kit (along with a tire plug kit) to help on the trail if I get a flat, though luckily that hasn't happened yet (knock on wood). Though you could just as well carry a spare tube and use that with a regular frame pump. One of my tubeless setups is a 3 inch tire and the spare tube for that is gigantic, hence the co2 cartridges and tire plug.

Shoji - funnily enough I messaged Philip as I came across his thread on that bike build and he offered to sell me his wheelset!

for reference, atlas rims tubeless set up is awesome.  i use the Airwave Airblast Tubeless track pump here. So easy to set up tubless with that pump. No leaks once your bead is seated. i'm selling so i can try to possibly get wider rims, set up tubeless again. maybe cliffhangers or rhynolite XL tubeless. but mostly likely putting on cheap 26" wheelset tubed for the time being so I can switch out RTPs and knobbies quicker.

Perhaps I've just been lucky, but with a good tubeless setup, don't the beads stay in place by friction and not by air pressure alone? I've had setups where air pressure was required, and I never felt comfortable with them -- didn't want to need a compressor 20 miles from home, or to risk having to install a tube in a tire messy with sealant.

At any rate, Furious Freds' beads stay stuck on Velocity Blunts rims even when all the air leaks out.

Not really a response to your question, but a plug for Cliffhangers: they're awesome.  I've got the 622 versions on my Clem build and they built up easy, so far have been super bombproof (laced 36h 3x), and the tubeless setup is 100% straightforward (I'm using Specialized "2bliss Ready" MTB tires).  I seated the tires initially with a compressor, but the last time I topped off sealant I seated them with a floor pump, just to see if it could be done-- no problem!  I think it's cool that Velocity is making a rim like this, and it seems perfectly suited to something like a tubeless RTP setup.

I had issues setting up Blunt 35 rims tubeless.  Any little bump seemed to make the tire burp.  So I went split tubeless using 20 or 24" tubes and have had no issues since, even running super low pressures.  Super easy set up, no tape to worry about.  That's what I'd recommend.
