I have seen a lot of nice camp setups here, but it would be cool to have a thread that consolidates them! Since this past weekend was Swift Campout, seems a good a time as any to kick it off.

I went to a small island in the Gulf Island range along Vancouver Island, just north of the border from the San Juan islands of WA. This particular island is smaller than most and no motorized traffic nor roads on the island, which was amazing! There was a double track / single track trail around the perimeter that totalled 10km in length, which I looped twice.

Unsurprisingly, the Bombadil handled the trip as well as it looks. I packed pretty heavy since there wasn't a ton of distance to cover (35km each way) and the Bombadil was in its element.

Gorgeous looking steed and environs Jason! What is your crankset/gearing and pedal combo if I may ask?

Agreed.
Just a beautiful, well appointed, super capable ride.
Looks right out of a Bicycle Quarterly adventure.

What bags are those that you use?

k.

Cheers all - to answer the questions:

Drivetrain is a Silver 170 38/24 crankset with a Deore LX FD (forget which exactly) and a 11-34 XT 9spd cassette and the 8s XT RD all run off the BS77 bar ends. It's perfect.  My Hillborne is similar, but with an M952 XTR rear mech and Suntour front paired with RH 42/26 cranks

Bags are a small Fab's chest up front and large rear, and Buckhorn panniers.  Very happy with them all!

Here's a blast from the past for you. My Dec '96 All Rounder on it's maiden voyage in the Spring of '97. A 4 day circumnavigation of the Chiricahua Mountains of southeast Arizona. Jandd Mountain Touring panniers/Carradice Camper. TA Zephyr 46-34-26. I remember it was hot. Pushing a 100 and 10% humidity. Sucked the H2O right out of you.

For years, my 60cm Bombadil was set up with front & rear panniers, as in the first photo. Of late, I've gone to frame and fork bags (second photo), in a (futile) attempt to force me to leave the kitchen sink at home. Admittedly, the second photo was for a Southern Swift Campout (i.e. mid-winter here in Oz), so I had more clothes and a warmer/bigger/heavier sleeping bag than I would in summertime. The five liters of water wasn't needed for winter camping, but sure can be here in the summer. Hydrate or die, as they say!
Mmmmm... it's definitely time to go camping again...
cheers,
Andrew in Sydney

Such a groovy Bombadil Jason, and your camping setup compliments it very nicely.

My setup has evolved as I look to become more minimalist in what I carry. I rarely use the front panniers unless there is going to be great distance between resupply points. Here are a few iterations of my setups on my Hunq and the Atlantis.

Here's my camping set up from last year's trip to the Delaware Water Gap.  I like front panniers for when hike-a-bike becomes necessary, and the  front basket is key for carrying pies (here from Village Farmer on the AT).  I still need to sew a top tube bag to carry my tenkara rod and tarp poles.

Sorry Steve; I have not, but I'm sure I saved 5+ pounds just in the weight of the racks and panniers, not to mention not taking as much stuff.
cheers,
Andrew

Good timing! I was just doing a shakedown ride with my new bags. I'm going to do the GAP -> C&O over 5 days next week.

Fully (over?) loaded Appa.

Note: I took a couple things out of the new panwahs after this ride, and the front Swift bag is mostly expansion space as needed (e.g. carrying a quart of cole slaw in this photo)

I see a few Happisack (or similar) + front basket setups, which is what I used on a recent S24O with my Platypus. This was warm weather camping in a hammock. For nights cooler than 50deg I'd want more space for warmer quilts and clothing - swapping the Happisack for a rear rack carrying two small/front panniers would work. On a longer trip I'd also probably prefer to move the Nalgene from the stem pouch to the underside downtube cage mount to keep the pouch free for other things.

Dave, I  really like your Platy build!    She looks good loaded for travel.

What's your impression riding it with a load?
Thanks, Steve

Kim, That Hunq is sooo right! That first photo really shows the Hunq in its element.

Hey Kim,
Your set up is almost a doppelganger to my Armageddon Outta Here Rohloff Riv from 20 years ago.

Jason — Looking good as always! I hope you don't mind that you reminded me of my all-time favorite photo of a Rivendell, your Bombadil in the woods:

Jason Bombadil green.jpg

Brian Turner's Atlantis — I love the Atlantis green with the dark sidewalls and brownish-red bar tape and brown saddle. This is the kind of subtle color harmony I really love in a build but don't see as often as I'd like!
