I have my cazaderos mounted front Pacenti PL 23 rim no problem other than hell to initially mount. Rear mounted on a Velocity Synergy rim and it has a hop to it. I checked the rim against a fixed point and it's true. I can notice the bump and feel it while riding and it's really annoying. I've pumped the tube and tire up to 100 psi but the tire is seated. All I can assume it must be the tube I'm using. Perhaps too large so there's extra mass? Any experiences out there? I've used 26" tubes and "650b" tubes with the same outcome.

Did you add an extra layer of rim strip to help with seat the bead? I think some folks do that.

Synergy rims have a deep well that can make tire seating difficult.  It's the rim, not the tube.

Brian suggests a thicker rim strip to build up the well.  That's a good start.

I also suggest lubing the bead of the tire with something (I use liquid soap) to help it slip.

I had the identical thing happen with my Rock N Road rear tire. Nice prominent hop . I partially deflated and wrestled with the tire to get it to sit differently. Inflated it to the max psi, etc. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to what made it sit properly, it just popped at one point and the hop was pretty much gone. That was on Dyad rims. Very frustrating for sure. Next time I'll be trying some talc powder on the tube and perhaps even some soap on the bead, though admittedly that makes me feel kinda nervous.

Thanks Brian & Tim, I'll try another layer of rim tape and use soapy water.

Now Patrick I realize you like your Grandfors but there will be no hatchet job.

Mark,  I'll pull the wheel and slide the tire and try it again. Thanks!

Och! Don't dismiss the hatchet so quickly, Hugh. It's amazing how many things a hatchet solves, applied properly, from slivers to amputations. Some require finesse, others brute force, others a combination in varying order. Though I find jobs that start out requiring finesse that end with ogre force are the least successful. Sardonic Grin.

im no help with lumps, but otherwise how do you like the cazadero? do they actually measure smaller than 42?

Deflate the tire and wet down the bead of the tire with soapy water. I find dawn dish soap works best. Soapy water helps lubricate the tire bead so it will seat properly.

I reccommend Grand Bois 650b 36 hole black label rims. GB/Compass tires practically auto seat on them from my experience.

Drew,

I like them. The 650b version weighs 470g which isn't the lightest but damn light. They handle hard pack and semi loose dirt trails nicely with pressures around 32# front & 35# rear and are really fast rolling with the center ridge. Not much puncture protection which has me considering a tubeless setup, however I have some trepidation with the side wall strength? Keeping the weight down meant shaving material from the casing and side walls and you don't really want a sidewall gash tubeless. I need to ride them a bunch more to really know how they hold up.

Cheers,

~Hugh

I've had this issue before. Once it was resolved by going to high pressure to make sure the bead is properly seated, but you already tried that.

I blame the tube. I've had more than a little bad luck with faulty tubes that will have a massive bulge at a thin spot. Also had this problem, for some reason, repeatedly using Schwalbe 650B tubes within a Panaracer on a VO rim. Switched to 26" tubes and the fit was perfect, with no more hop.

I'd try a new (name brand) 26" tube. Good luck, it's an annoying problem to have.

Update:

So I used the soapy solution and applied it to the tire bead and it helped. However there is still a slight hop. Next I'll add a second layer of rim tape and report back. Thanks all to your help.
