All riding is on blacktop, just want a larger footprint.  Don’t want a plastic or rubber pedal.

Thank

MKS used to make a campus pedal that was aluminum.  Rivendell carried them.  My wife has them on her bike & likes them

Thanks. I’ve seen a few MKS pedals but the reflectors turn me off. I was on their web page today looking. I’ve used their pedals for years.

I have VP Vice pedals on a few bikes and I like them. They are reasonably priced and plenty grippy for me. I also have a pair of Race Face Chester pedals on a bike and like them as well. They are made of a composite material I think but they don’t flex at all.

Thanks Robert, I will look at the VP.  I know of Race-face a bit. Will look again.

How about the MKS Grip Monarch that Rivendell sells? I've been riding a pair for most of this year and like them a lot. Big, roomy and grippy.
They have reflectors but are protected from damage and I believe that they can each be popped out by releasing the two expanding tabs.

Thanks David, I am looking at those.  There is a bit older model that looks very similar called the Lambda.

I really like the Blackspire Sub4 that someone here recommended last year.

David, how big are these?  I have been using the MKS touring (rat trap) pedal and would like a larger footprint, not sure how much larger though.

Joel, I second the Lambda pedals (or the newer Monarch). Five years on and the Lambda's are still comfortable and provide good grip.

Best,

Thanks Rich.  The look a bit long but maybe they will be perfect and the price I’d good from modern.

I have very wide feet and the MKS grip monarch is narrow where I want it to be wide. I am using Speedplay Drilliums on my Gus Boots Wilsen build. Kind of hard to find, I don't think they are made anymore. Not generally fond of black components, but I love the look of these. Not the lightest pedal around.

I also use VO Sabot when the pedal has to be polished silver.

I also have several Diety TMACs in several colors. I wish they had a polished model

I really like my Spank Oozy pedal, and I found a used pair to help with the cost. They're really nice and big but have tons of negative space and are wicked thin/light so they don't look clunky even on my 'road' bike. Analog has tons of literature on flat pedals and these were one of their approved models so I just followed suit. For something cheaper and less BRAAPPPie the MKS GripKing and Allways pedals are awesome.

Thanks Andrew. I will look at the info on Analog.

I am fully converted to the MKS Monarch / Lambda now.  They were a tad strange feeling at first with the curved ends, but you get used to that and the grip and support is wonderful, especially it's boot season here now.  I love the Chromag Scarab pedals as well but they are $$$ (I have them on my proper mtn bike)

VP Vice all the way! They're thinner so essentially lower your bottom bracket or center of gravity a little more than you'd expect. Very nice.

I haven't tried the others though. The Speedplays look nice! VP Vice are generally expensive but I found some on eBay for $40 or so a pair. I think I have bought 5 pairs of them.

The only thing bad about the VP Vice is sometimes they tear up your shoes. Don't wear nice shoes with them!! I learned that the hard way.

Joe,

MKS Lambda-Monarch/formerly GripKing pedal

The platform itself is 4 1/2” long by 3” wide = 114.3 x 76.2 mm (Which is different from the GripKing!)

I have VP platforms on a number of bikes and like them for light use but would never again use them for touring. The bearings that VP use are of a lower quality than those used by MKS (I think it has to do with the outer being a bushing with a plastic sleeve or something). Either way, I've had VP bearings fail in the field, not quite catastrophically but really, really annoyingly, and I've read reports of people who really liked the large platform of the Catalyst pedal switch to something else because of bearing failure.

Whether it's the Sneaker Pedal or the Grip King or whatever it's called, you can feel instantly that MKS uses a higher quality bearing. I've settled on the platform pedals sold by Rene Herse:

https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/pedals/mks-allways-pedals/

I don't mean to identify with a particular brand or bash another, but riding unsupported in Death Valley for days with a wobbling pedal is not something I wish to repeat.

Thanks Daniel.  I have always been happy with MKS pedals.  I ordered a couple of pair yesterday.

I'm a fan of VO's Sabot.  It has a large platform (100mm by 100mm, IIRC), is aluminum and silver, and has shortish rounded pins for grip.  The pins don't rip up my shoes, but they also don't grip well when the pedal's wet.  That last bit is their one downside, but it's a price I'm willing to pay for pins that don't chew up my soles.

Dave, those look nice.  If I don’t like the MKS I have coming I will look at these.  Wet riding would not be an issue for me and I like the short pins.

Thank you

I've had bad luck with some mks pedals so years ago I started switching to DMR Vault pedals. I really like them for a flat pedal especially when out on the mtb trails. I also got a pair of Diety Tmac on a bike purchase and those pedals have been really great too. Both of these have bigger platforms than the VIP thin grippy pedals that Riv once sold...not sure if they still do.
