Bad idea? I was thinking of using them with SKS P55 fenders. I have plenty of room for both on my Bombadil. Are the tires too aggressive for fenders?

I tried Smart Sams with Woody's flat fenders and the amount of detritus chunked into the fender was a constant bother and noise. I didn't experience it as a safety hazard, so for me it boils down to personal preference. And without full wrap around fenders and full length in the rear, the mud and slop got all over me anyway at speed, so I put up with a lot for no practical benefit.

With abandon,
Patrick

I ran a test of a config of RnR's + woody fenders over the summer, before a week-long tour that was expected to see a fair amount of unimproved and mixed-surface trails. I went for a ride in the DC Metro area on the Georgetown Branch and C&O trails, both unpaved, and found the experience unnerving. The RnR's are fairly supple and the knobs appears to be comprised of a soft rubber compound, and they picked up quite a few small rocks and other trail detritus, which never managed to lock my front or rear wheels, but made for a quite a bit of scraping and pinging as stuff made it's way between tire and fender. Inspecting the inside of the fenders at the end of the ride showed off many new scrapes and gouges. I opted not to tour with the fenders, but the RnR's were nice. I think the only way I'd use RnR's and fenders is if I were to spend full time on paved surfaces, but of course, I wouldn't really want RnR's for that.

Someone had the same question. That thread has how I configured my SKS fenders to accommodate BGs, using a post I saw on the rivblug.

I did it with SKS P50 fenders.

Also rode mine through some singletrack horsetrails, not too much loose rocks though. I would probably take off fenders for rocky trails

Dear Chad,

The BG RnR tires don't grab sticks or larger things all that much--I use them without issue with Honjo H51s and the VO "Zeppelin" fender blades on rough-road and fire-road rides. They grab plenty of gravel of a certain size (all small enough to pass through the fender). However, if you're riding offroad extensively, then I'd skip the mudflap and live with the additional spatter, as that low-hanging flap will guide many more things into the fender than find their way there otherwise.

Best Regards,

Will

I've been riding primarily RnR tires with the 52mm Velo Orange Zeppelin fenders pretty much since I got my Atlantis. Its been GREAT. I get the occasional rock kicked up and around the fender, but it's pretty uncommon really. I've ridden trails and two winters with no issue. I just recently added mudflaps in increase the fender effectiveness.

I'd say go for it.

You can see the generous clearance in how I've set them up. Please excuse the poor fender lines in this photo...it has since been corrected.

Excellent timing, as I was wondering the same thing!

I've been wanting to try these tires on my Sam for ages, and now that it appears Nor Cal may get a legit winter, seems like now is the time. Currently running Compass tires (Barlow Pass) with no fenders, and local dirt excursions are getting progressively sketchy.

How do folks like Rock n Roads in general? I would use these tires on a combination of pavement and dirt...are they tolerable on pavement?

They are an ok all-rounder, but not great at any one thing in particular I find. They are very slow on pavement when compared to Thunder Burts. Pretty good on dirt trails/single track. The tread is overkill if you're just thinking pavement and gravel.

Thanks for the feedback on Thunder Burts. I would not have expected them to be faster on pavement than the RNR's. I would like to try them on my Bombadil, but I'm nervous about spending $91 per tire and not have them fit.

So far the RNR's have been pretty decent on pavement. They have a slight but not unpleasant hum, but aren't as buzzy as the Quasi-Motos which were not terrible on pavement compared to most knobby MTB tires. Hope the work okay on single track.

Thunder Burts can be found much cheaper than $91 each.
You can get a pair shipped from Germany to the US for that price.

I picked up a pair of 26 x 2.1 Liteskin Burts for my KOM, but I haven't re-assembled it after the powdercoat yet.  In the meantime, I put them on my girlfriend's gravel/dirt bike (another old 26er with drop bars) and she liked them a lot.  She said they felt faster than Super Motos, even on pavement.

I also like TB better. Even the WTB Nanos are a great alternative as well.
